Chapter 28 - THE HOUSE FRANKLIN REFUSED TO INHERITRidgecrest Estate could not remain a family home.
Too much of its value came from accounts Gordon manipulated. Too many rooms had concealed evidence or people.
The property entered receivership.
Legitimate portions of Franklin and Eleanor’s ownership were separated from criminal proceeds. Franklin could have purchased the estate back using his lawful share.
He refused.
“I built memories there,” he said. “That does not mean I need to die inside them.”
The mansion was sold to a public consortium. Part became an elder-justice training center. Part became temporary housing for witnesses attending long trials. The greenhouse site remained a small historical garden honoring Isaac Bell and workers harmed at the mill.
No Mercer family member held a permanent seat.
Evelyn Nash received compensation and chose an independent apartment near the coast. She did not move in with Franklin.
They visited as siblings-in-law connected through Eleanor, not as people required to rebuild one household.
Teresa remained in her own home.
Samuel lived nearby after completing custody but held no key to Peyton’s residence.
Family proximity did not become guardianship.
The shed remained behind the training center.
Franklin had once demanded preservation until everyone understood what happened there.
Visitors began treating it as the story’s central object.
Reporters photographed the padlock.
Training groups stood beside the damp mattress.
Some called Franklin brave.
Others asked whether Peyton could recreate the moment she broke the lock.
Franklin hated the requests.
“I was sick and frightened,” he said. “I was not performing history.”
The center revised access.
The shed closed to general tours.
Professional groups could review forensic photographs, structural evidence, and the chain of decisions leading to confinement.
No reenactments.
No one drank from a replica stagnant bowl.
The original restraints remained in a restricted evidence collection.
After appeals ended, the center asked Franklin what he wanted.
“Remove the mattress,” he said.
It had already been preserved through samples and photographs.
The physical bedding was destroyed.
“Remove the bowl.”
The bowl entered the institutional archive because it documented neglect. Franklin agreed after its display label avoided turning it into a dramatic symbol without context.
“The walls?”
Franklin touched the rough wood.
“Keep one section showing where the hidden camera was. Take the rest down.”
The shed was dismantled carefully.
One wall panel entered the training center.
The remaining wood was examined, cleaned, and reused to build benches in the public garden.
The padlock remained in the archive.
It opened nothing.
Franklin sat on one of the benches months later.
Peyton placed a blanket across his knees after asking.
“Is this better?” she said.
He looked toward the garden.
“It is wood again.”
The sentence stayed with her.
The family trust completed restructuring. Franklin retained personal assets needed for care and ordinary gifts. The larger Mercer estate became a victim, employee, and community structure under independent governance.
Peyton inherited no company command.
Wyatt received no automatic share after release.
Lucinda’s forfeiture remained final.
Evelyn and Teresa received compensation rather than control over strangers.
Samuel received no estate position through paternity.
The wedding ring returned from evidence after Eleanor’s intentions had been documented.
Franklin accepted it.
He wore it on a chain because arthritis made his fingers swell.
After his death, the ring would go to Peyton only if she chose it. Refusal would not affect any other gift.
Peyton had returned to Major Crimes by then.
Her first month back produced an elder-abuse complaint involving a judge’s mother.
She immediately transferred operational control to an external captain and remained available as a witness consultant.
No one called the recusal weakness.
