Officers found a medical suite beyond it.
The woman inside was not Eleanor.
She was Evelyn Nash, Eleanor’s younger sister.
Peyton had met her only twice as a child. Evelyn disappeared after Eleanor’s funeral, and the family claimed she moved overseas.
Her resemblance to Eleanor was striking enough that low-resolution footage created the illusion of resurrection.
Evelyn had been confined beneath the estate for nineteen months.
She remained mentally alert but physically weak.
Gordon abducted her after she threatened to challenge Eleanor’s will. He used photographs of her inside medical rooms to support claims that Eleanor’s final records were confused and unreliable.
An identical-looking relative made forged evidence easier.
Evelyn looked at Peyton.
“You have her eyes.”
“Why didn’t anyone know you were here?”
“Your mother knew.”
Lucinda had visited the underground room six times.
She brought books, food, and medication.
She also locked the door each time she left.
“I told myself she was trying to keep me alive,” Evelyn said. “Then I understood survival was the payment she offered for silence.”
Evelyn knew more about the Mercer trust than anyone still living.
Eleanor had created an automatic forfeiture clause. Any beneficiary using violence, confinement, fraudulent medical claims, or coercion against Franklin or another family elder lost all inheritance rights.
Gordon never became a beneficiary directly.
Lucinda and Wyatt did.
By attaching crimes to them, Gordon could force them to surrender their shares into companies he controlled.
Peyton’s name appeared in the false accounts because Gordon intended to disqualify her too.
Franklin’s confinement had been the final trigger.
Once the shed evidence entered an independent medical record, the trust froze the entire Mercer family inheritance.
Control transferred to an outside protector.
“Who?” Peyton asked.
Evelyn looked toward the department phone in her hand.
“Raymond Pike.”
Pike had not merely hidden Marina and buried evidence.
Eleanor named him as emergency protector because she believed law enforcement would resist family pressure.
He failed.
The trust now required a court to decide whether his concealment counted as complicity.
If Pike was disqualified, control passed to the second protector.
Dr. Calvin Roarke.
The physician who helped drug Eleanor and forged Franklin’s diagnosis.
Eleanor had chosen him before discovering his betrayal.
The trust’s protective structure had been captured from within.
Gordon’s goal was not simply stealing Franklin’s assets.
He wanted every honest successor disqualified so Roarke could seize lawful control and transfer the estate.
Cole obtained an emergency order freezing the trust before Roarke acted.
The request went to Judge Malcolm Dyer.
He denied it.
Minutes later, Roarke filed documents asserting protector authority over the Mercer estate.
He ordered Peyton removed from Franklin’s hospital room, suspended the Rosebridge audit, and demanded Evelyn Nash be returned to “licensed care.”
No one complied immediately.
But the legal conflict created delay.
Gordon used that delay to activate the storm-shelter server.
All estate lights went out.
A fire began inside the library records room.
Officers evacuated evidence teams while sprinklers activated.
Gordon disappeared through a concealed passage.
Wyatt helped police locate the exit route.
It led toward Judge Dyer’s private hunting lodge.
Peyton studied the financial ledger again.
One payment stood apart from the rest.
Roarke transferred five million dollars to an account under Evelyn Nash’s name.
Evelyn denied knowing it existed.
The transfer created evidence that she had accepted payment for remaining hidden.

Then the hospital called.
Franklin’s condition had worsened after someone altered his intravenous medication.
