Selene lay in a secure maternity room while Mara watched through a remote feed.
The scan revealed two fetal heartbeats.
Selene had been told she was carrying one child.
The second fetus was positioned behind the first and had been missed—or deliberately omitted—from prior reports.
Both appeared viable.
The genetic results would take time, but the embryo-transfer log strongly suggested one fetus came from Marina’s egg and Richard’s sperm.
The other came from Mara’s stolen egg.
The paternal source was sealed.
Selene began crying.
“I don’t know what I’m allowed to feel.”
Mara understood.
Everyone around them would immediately discuss biological ownership, inheritance, and evidence.
No one had asked Selene what it meant to discover two children had been placed inside her without informed consent.
“You are allowed to feel whatever comes,” Mara said.
Selene looked at her.
“After what I did to you?”
“What you did remains true. What they did to you is also true.”
Selene covered her face.
She admitted that Beatrice had instructed her to stand beside Adrian in the ICU and act triumphant. Beatrice said Mara would sign faster if she believed the marriage was irreparably over.
“I wanted you hurt,” Selene whispered. “I thought if you hated him enough, he would choose me completely.”
“He chose himself.”
“Yes.”
Mara did not offer forgiveness.
But she refused to let Beatrice use Selene’s guilt to control the pregnancy.
Independent advocates were assigned to both unborn children.
No family trust could exercise authority without review.
Richard’s attorneys challenged the order.
No final outcome followed.
The genetic test identified the second fetus’s paternal line.
Adrian.
A child had been created from Mara and Adrian’s reproductive material years before the affair.
The embryo had been preserved and implanted into Selene during the recent prenatal procedure.
Selene was carrying two children:
One biologically connected to Richard and Marina.
One biologically connected to Mara and Adrian.
The continuity program had placed two competing heirs in one woman.
If either company attempted to claim one child, the other corporation would become entangled.
Selene’s body had been turned into a legal merger.
Adrian stared at the report.
“That child is ours.”
Mara looked directly at him.
“No. That child is a person carried by Selene. Biology does not restore our marriage or give you ownership.”
He lowered his eyes.
Mara’s words applied to herself too.
She could not claim instant motherhood over Lila, Sophie, or the unborn child simply because her cells helped create them.
Parenthood would require truth, consent, relationship, and time.
Beatrice requested a private meeting with Mara.
Against advice, Mara agreed under recording.
Beatrice entered the ICU wearing hospital restraints and guarded by two officers.
For the first time, she looked older than powerful.
“You think independent advocates will save those children?”
“They are safer than your foundation.”
“Richard owns judges. Jonathan owns doctors. Elise owns the biological key. Marcus owns the patents.”
“And you own nothing?”
Beatrice’s mouth tightened.
“I own the knowledge of why Richard created the second embryo.”
“Why?”
“Because Adrian cannot have biological children naturally.”
The statement contradicted the embryo record.
Beatrice explained.
Adrian’s preserved sperm had been taken during adolescence before toxin exposure. Richard anticipated that the continuity program might later require an heir through him.
Adrian’s adult fertility had been deliberately destroyed through the same compound that damaged his liver.
His illness and infertility were connected.
Beatrice blamed Richard.
Adrian had grown up believing he was naturally infertile. Beatrice used that fear to control his relationships and make Selene’s pregnancy seem miraculous.
“Why poison him too?” Mara asked.
“I did not.”
“Your tonic carried the compound.”
“I was giving him the antidote.”
Beatrice claimed the ginger tonic contained a stabilizing drug. Someone replaced several bottles with toxin.
She suspected Richard.
The laboratory receipts implicated her because Richard used her pharmacy account.
Her explanation could not erase the confrontation in the ICU or stolen tissue plan.
But the source of Adrian’s poisoning remained unresolved.
Beatrice leaned closer.
“Richard created the children. Jonathan created the trait. Elise protected the archive. Marcus distributed the patents. I did one thing none of them expected.”
“What?”
“I preserved the original camera recordings.”
She offered Mara access to a hidden server in exchange for legal protection from Richard.
Mara refused to promise immunity.
“Then the server remains sealed.”
Mara looked toward the camera above the ICU door.
“Your mistake is believing evidence belongs to whoever hides it.”
After Beatrice left, the camera blinked twice.
A data transfer began automatically.
Someone had already opened the server.
The recovered footage showed Richard entering Mara’s operating room during surgery.
He removed his mask.
Adrian watched from a viewing window.
The recording carried audio.
Richard told him:
“Once she wakes, you will give her the divorce papers. If she refuses, her postoperative death has already been documented.”
Adrian answered:
“I understand.”
Mara stared at him.
He had claimed he knew nothing about the planned death certificate.
