Chapter 3 - The Voice Above the DoorThe intercom went silent before security could trace it.

Mara’s pulse climbed.

Dr. Grant moved closer to the bed.

“Your mother died when you were born?”

“That is what my father told me.”

Beatrice laughed softly from the corner.

“Jonathan told you many things.”

Mara looked at her.

“You knew my parents before I met Adrian.”

“I knew your father.”

“How?”

“Richard and I invested in Vale Therapeutics.”

Richard Holloway, Beatrice’s late husband, had funded several biotech companies before his reported death twelve years earlier. Mara had known there was a dispute between Richard and Jonathan Vale, but the case was sealed.

Beatrice claimed Jonathan stole a regenerative treatment developed with Holloway money.

Mara remembered a different version.

Her father said Richard tried to turn an experimental therapy into a private inheritance tool.

Both men were dead.

Both stories had been shaped by survivors with something to gain.

The investigators traced the intercom signal to a restricted research level beneath the hospital.

That level did not appear on public building plans.

Beatrice’s foundation had financed its construction.

The ICU elevator required a keycard unavailable to ordinary staff.

One of Beatrice’s cards opened it.

Security escorted an investigative team downstairs while Mara watched through a body-camera feed on the monitor beside her bed.

The elevator descended beyond the marked basement.

Its doors opened into a sterile corridor lined with glass walls.

Laboratories stood dark on both sides.

At the far end, one room remained illuminated.

Inside was the empty preservation unit that had held Mara’s liver tissue.

A hospital chart lay open beside it.

Patient name:

Elise Vale.

Date of birth:

Sixty-two years earlier.

Status:

Alive—advanced hepatic failure.

Mara stared at the screen.

The woman listed as the intended recipient was her mother.

Elise would now be sixty-two.

The age matched the initials E.V.

Dr. Grant searched the digital chart remotely.

Elise had received treatment beneath the hospital for almost three years. Her scans showed progressive liver disease caused by long-term exposure to the same synthetic compound found in Adrian.

Someone had poisoned both of them.

“Why would my mother be alive?” Mara whispered.

Beatrice’s expression became unreadable.

“Because Jonathan never allowed her to die.”

“You said you knew nothing about the recipient.”

“I said no such thing.”

Adrian turned toward his mother.

“You knew Mara’s mother was here?”

“I knew there was a Vale patient.”

“You arranged the surgery.”

“I arranged survival.”

“By nearly killing Mara?”

“Her liver will regenerate.”

Mara pressed a hand against the blanket over her incision.

“You keep saying that as though regrowth erases theft.”

Security entered Elise’s treatment room.

The bed was empty.

A warm indentation remained in the mattress. An IV bag still dripped onto the floor where someone had disconnected it hurriedly.

On the bedside table sat a family photograph.

Jonathan held infant Mara.

Beside him stood a woman whose face had been torn from the image.

The missing half had been placed beneath the frame.

When investigators aligned it, Elise’s face became visible.

She resembled Mara closely.

A handwritten note rested behind the photograph.

Mara, if they bring you here, the transplant was never about saving Adrian.

The note continued:

Your father designed the Vale trait. Beatrice turned it into a market. I stayed hidden because they promised to leave you untouched. They lied.

Mara’s hands began trembling.

Elise knew her daughter was alive.

She had remained hidden while Mara grew up believing she had no mother.

The note identified a meeting location: a Vale Therapeutics research campus outside Nashville.

It also carried a warning.

Do not let Adrian follow you. Richard Holloway built him for this.

Adrian read over Mara’s shoulder.

“What does that mean?”

Beatrice looked toward her son, but said nothing.

The investigators found one more record in Elise’s room.

Adrian’s original birth certificate.

The mother’s name was Beatrice Holloway.

The father’s name was not Richard Holloway.

It was Jonathan Vale.

Mara stared at Adrian.

Her husband might be her father’s son.

Her half-brother.

Adrian stepped backward in horror.

“That’s forged.”

Beatrice rose suddenly.

The officers stopped her.

“It was never supposed to surface.”

Mara looked directly at her.

“You arranged our marriage.”

Beatrice’s silence answered.

👉 The hidden medical level suggested Mara and Adrian might share a father, turning their marriage and transplant into part of a plan that began before either of them was born.
