Chapter 8 - The Nursery Beneath the EstateBeatrice’s mansion stood on forty acres outside Franklin.

Federal investigators entered with a warrant while Beatrice remained under hospital supervision.

The silver key opened a steel door behind the wine cellar.

A staircase descended into a nursery that had not been designed for babies alone.

The underground floor contained bedrooms for children of different ages, medical examination rooms, classrooms, and observation glass.

It had been empty for less than a day.

Fresh food remained in the kitchen.

Beds were still warm.

Family photographs lined the walls.

Every child pictured carried some combination of Vale or Holloway features.

Mara recognized Lila.

She also recognized a boy who resembled Adrian.

Another girl had Selene’s eyes.

Investigators recovered a registry.

Twelve children had passed through the nursery over twenty years.

Some were embryos created through the continuity program.

Others were children removed from parents who threatened to expose it.

Several had been placed with wealthy families under sealed adoptions.

The final three remained unaccounted for.

Lila Vale, now in independent care.

Evan Holloway, age eleven.

Sophie Vale, age six.

Mara read the names twice.

No one in the room could identify Evan or Sophie.

Beatrice was brought to the estate under guard.

She refused to answer questions until she saw the registry.

Then her composure collapsed.

“Where are they?”

Mara looked at her.

“You built this place.”

“I financed it.”

“That is not a distinction.”

“Richard controlled the placements.”

“Richard is dead.”

Beatrice stared at her.

“No, he isn’t.”

Adrian’s father had survived his reported stroke by entering the same identity-protection system used for Jonathan and Elise.

Beatrice claimed she believed Richard died two years later in a private clinic.

But the registry showed Evan Holloway was born five years after Richard’s public death.

The father field listed Richard.

The mother field listed Selene Ward.

Selene was thirty-two. Five years earlier, she had undergone a fertility procedure through the Holloway Foundation.

She remembered being told the treatment failed.

Beatrice’s clinic had taken embryos without consent.

Evan might be Selene’s biological son.

Selene stared at the boy’s photograph.

“He has my brother’s eyes.”

She wanted to know where he was.

Mara watched her grief carefully.

Selene had participated in Mara’s humiliation, but she too had been used. Both truths remained.

The registry listed Sophie’s parents as:

Mother: Mara Vale.

Father: Adrian Holloway.

Mara felt nauseated.

A second embryo created from her stolen eggs had been combined with Adrian’s sperm before their marriage.

A surrogate gave birth six years earlier.

Sophie was their biological child.

Adrian read the page.

“We have a daughter?”

“No,” Mara said sharply. “A laboratory created a child from us. We do not know her. We do not own her.”

He flinched.

She refused to let the system transform a child into instant marital connection.

Investigators discovered security footage from the previous evening.

Dr. Sayer led two children through the underground exit while Beatrice’s impersonator distracted hospital security.

Evan and Sophie entered a medical transport van.

Richard Holloway sat inside.

Alive.

The children appeared calm around him.

He had likely raised them.

Beatrice watched the recording.

“Richard was never supposed to know where Sophie was.”

“Why?” Adrian asked.

“Because she carries both direct ownership lines. If she is recognized, every Vale and Holloway succession dispute ends with her.”

A six-year-old girl controlled more legal power than any adult in the family.

Richard could use her guardianship to seize both companies.

The nursery records contained a scheduled hearing.

Richard had filed to restore his identity and declare himself guardian of Evan and Sophie.

He also requested emergency authority over Lila.

The hearing would take place in forty-eight hours before a sealed family court.

The judge was Victor Hale, the Holloway Foundation’s longtime legal adviser.

Mara ordered her attorney to challenge the hearing.

Before the motion could be filed, Beatrice’s mansion lights failed.

A hidden generator activated beneath the nursery.

Every monitor displayed Richard’s face.

He looked older but healthy.

Sophie stood beside him holding a stuffed rabbit.

Evan remained near the door.

Richard looked directly at Mara.

“You found the children before you understood the family.”

“Release them.”

“They are safer with me.”

“You used their bodies to control companies.”

“I protected them from Beatrice.”

“You created them.”

Richard smiled.

“So did you.”

Mara’s voice became cold.

“Not knowingly.”

“The law will decide whether intention matters.”

Sophie looked toward the camera.

“Mara?”

Mara leaned closer.

“Yes.”

The little girl asked, “Are you the mother who gave me away, or the one who wants me back?”

May you like

Richard had already taught her the two versions he intended to use.

👉 The hidden children were alive, but Richard had begun shaping their memories before Mara could reach them.
