Chapter 6 - The Man Behind the Operating GlassThe hospital’s transplant inventory confirmed it.

Three portions had been removed from Mara.

One went to Adrian.

One entered preservation for Elise.

A smaller section had been transported during surgery through a private corridor beneath the hospital.

The receiving surgeon was Dr. Malcolm Sayer.

The patient used the code J.V.

Sayer refused to identify him.

Federal investigators found no Jonathan Vale in public hospital records.

But a surgical video remained on the abandoned campus server.

It showed an elderly man beneath anesthesia.

His face was obscured by equipment. A scar crossed his left shoulder, matching one Jonathan received in a childhood accident.

The transplanted tissue was attached successfully.

Mara watched the footage twice.

Her father might be alive because he had taken part of her liver without permission.

Adrian reached toward her hand.

She pulled away.

He looked hurt.

The sight almost made her laugh.

“You do not get comfort from me because someone else betrayed us both.”

He lowered his hand.

“You’re right.”

Mara looked at the man whose life she had saved.

“Why did you agree to the divorce?”

Adrian closed his eyes.

Beatrice had convinced him Mara intended to take control of both companies after surgery. She showed him forged messages suggesting Mara planned to expose his affair, remove him as chief executive, and deny him access to Selene’s baby.

“She told me if I confronted you before you recovered, you would sign to avoid stress.”

“You chose the moment I was least capable of defending myself.”

“Yes.”

“You let Selene stand beside you.”

“Yes.”

“You watched your mother pull out my IV.”

His voice broke.

“Yes.”

Manipulation explained the path.

It did not erase his steps.

Mara turned toward the window.

“Our marriage ended before those papers touched the blanket.”

Adrian said nothing else.

Federal agents searched every property connected to Jonathan. One lead came from Sayer’s phone: a private rehabilitation residence overlooking the Tennessee River.

The property had received deliveries of transplant medication under a false patient name.

A tactical team entered.

The house was empty.

Medical equipment remained warm.

On the wall hung photographs of Mara taken throughout her life.

School ceremonies.

Her first day at Vale Therapeutics.

Her wedding.

Her donor evaluation.

Jonathan had watched her while pretending to be dead.

A letter waited on the desk.

Mara, I survived because the continuity program would have destroyed everything if Richard’s heirs believed I was gone. I stayed hidden to protect you from becoming a permanent donor.

Mara stopped reading.

“He protected me by taking my liver?”

Dr. Grant opened the second page.

Jonathan claimed he never authorized the latest surgery. Beatrice and Sayer diverted the tissue after discovering he had recently entered acute liver failure.

He accepted the transplant because he was unconscious when it began.

When he woke and learned the donor was Mara, he fled the rehabilitation home before investigators arrived.

The letter might have been true.

It might have been another attempt to preserve Mara’s sympathy.

Jonathan included coordinates for a meeting at the original Vale family cemetery.

He asked Mara to come without Beatrice, Adrian, Elise, or federal agents.

Marcus Vale’s name appeared as the contact.

Mara remembered Marcus as her father’s attorney. He vanished after Jonathan’s reported death.

The letter said Marcus had protected Jonathan’s legal identity for eight years.

Dr. Grant warned Mara not to travel in her condition.

She agreed.

Instead, investigators placed a camera at the cemetery while Mara joined through a secure connection.

At midnight, Jonathan entered the mausoleum.

He was older, thinner, but unmistakably alive.

Marcus walked beside him.

Jonathan looked directly toward the hidden camera.

“I know you’re watching, Mara.”

She activated the speaker.

“You took my liver.”

“I received it.”

“You remained alive while I buried you.”

“I was trying to dismantle Richard’s network.”

“You watched me marry his son.”

“I tried to stop the wedding.”

“How?”

“I sent you letters.”

Mara remembered anonymous warnings calling the Holloways dangerous. Beatrice had convinced her they came from a former employee seeking money.

Jonathan stepped closer to the camera.

“I failed you.”

It was the first direct admission any parent had offered her.

Then Marcus opened the mausoleum’s inner door.

A child’s medical bed stood inside.

A teenage girl lay unconscious beneath the monitors.

She looked like Mara.

Jonathan placed one hand on the girl’s shoulder.

“This is the reason they needed the rest of your liver.”

Mara stared at the screen.

“Who is she?”

Jonathan answered:

“Your daughter.”
