They Took the Shrimp / Chapter 1 / 20

Chapter 1 - THE DINNER EMILY TURNED AGAINST THEM The private dining room erupted in laughter as the servers carried in the steaming shrimp platter.

Crystal glasses glittered beneath warm chandeliers. Nearly forty relatives had gathered to celebrate Walter Parker’s seventieth birthday, filling the restaurant with loud toasts and stories about family loyalty.

Seven-year-old Olivia reached for one shrimp.

Jessica Parker seized the platter before the child could touch it.

“Those girls don’t need shrimp. They already cost this family enough.”

The room fell quiet.

Olivia immediately gripped Emily’s hand.

“Mom… why does Grandma hate us?”

Across the table, Michael stared at his plate.

He did not defend his daughters.

Jessica replaced the shrimp with a chipped bowl of cold leftovers. When four-year-old Megan leaned away, Jessica slammed it down. Broth splashed across the child’s yellow dress.

Megan burst into tears.

Michael approached with an irritated sneer.

“Don’t embarrass me at my father’s party.”

Emily wiped the stain from Megan’s dress. Beneath the tablecloth, her smartphone continued recording.

She checked the glowing indicator.

Then she rose with terrifying calm and took both daughters by the hand.

“The scene is just getting started.”

Jessica laughed.

“You always have to make everything about yourself.”

Emily began walking toward the exit.

Before she reached the door, every television in the restaurant changed simultaneously.

Walter’s birthday slideshow disappeared.

Bank receipts filled the screens.

Then payment records.

Then screenshots of Michael’s messages to Jessica.

The words were too small for most guests to read clearly, but the names, dates, account numbers, and dollar amounts were unmistakable.

Jessica’s voice suddenly blasted through the restaurant speakers.

“Use the girls’ accounts. Emily never checks anything anymore.”

Another recording followed.

Michael’s voice answered:

“Move it before Olivia’s tuition payment clears. We can blame the school.”

The guests slowly turned toward him.

The restaurant manager rushed toward the control panel and attacked the buttons, but the screens continued changing.

Emily paused at the doorway without looking back.

Michael’s face drained white.

“Emily… what did you do?”

She left the dining room with Olivia and Megan.

Outside, a waiter ran after her holding the final invoice.

“I think you need this.”

The bill for Walter’s seventy-person celebration had not been charged to Michael, Jessica, or the birthday guest.

The account holder was listed as:

Olivia and Megan Parker Educational Trust.

The dinner alone had cost $18,740.

Beneath the food and ballroom charges appeared a final service Emily did not recognize:

Family intervention and minor transportation package — $6,500.
