They Took the Shrimp / Chapter 9 / 20

Chapter 9 - THE VOICE ON THE RESTAURANT SPEAKER SJessica agreed to deliver Rose’s recording only if Emily withdrew the criminal complaint about Megan’s sedative.

Emily refused.

Jessica released part of the audio publicly.

Rose Bennett’s voice played through news sites and family accounts:

“Emily loves her daughters, but love does not always make a parent capable.”

The clip ended there.

Michael’s attorney immediately added it to the emergency custody petition.

Jessica claimed Emily’s own grandmother had questioned her fitness.

Daniel insisted the recording had been edited.

He had heard the complete version years earlier.

Rose was discussing what would happen if Emily remained married to Michael while he continued allowing Jessica to control the household.

The full sentence was:

Emily loves her daughters, but love does not always make a parent capable of seeing danger when it wears a familiar face.

Rose distrusted Michael.

Jessica removed everything after the word capable.

The original recording remained on a private restaurant server.

Evan provided access, but the file had been deleted.

A backup existed inside the audio system used during Walter’s party.

That explained why Jessica’s voice played over the speakers after Emily exposed the accounts. Daniel had programmed the system to preserve every sound during the evening.

The backup contained more than Rose’s message.

It recorded Jessica and the unknown Harbor Ridge driver speaking after Emily left.

“The mother escaped,” the driver said.

“Then use the court order.”

“It isn’t signed.”

“It will be.”

“By whom?”

Jessica answered:

“The same judge who signed the Crane report.”

Dr. Crane was not a judge.

The driver corrected her.

“You mean Judge Crane.”

Dr. Samuel Crane’s older brother presided over family-court emergency hearings in the same county. He had signed Michael’s temporary custody request based on a report prepared by his own brother.

Neither disclosed the relationship.

Rachel immediately filed to vacate the order.

Before the court could respond, the restaurant system played a final recording from the birthday night.

Michael spoke with Jessica near the kitchen.

“I won’t let them take Megan.”

“You don’t need her.”

“She’s my daughter.”

“She isn’t part of Rose’s company.”

“I said no.”

Jessica’s voice became quiet.

“Then Olivia learns what you did before she was born.”

Michael stopped speaking.

Emily confronted him.

He admitted that seven years earlier, while Emily was pregnant with Olivia, he borrowed money from Rose’s company using a forged guarantee. Daniel discovered it.

Rose threatened to remove Michael from every family account unless he repaid the debt.

Jessica covered it using money from Parker Seafood.

From that moment, she controlled him.

“What did the loan pay for?” Emily asked.

Michael looked toward Walter.

“A settlement.”

Years earlier, a refrigerated truck owned by Parker Seafood struck another vehicle. Michael had been driving after drinking at a company event.

Walter reported that an employee was behind the wheel.

The family paid the injured driver privately.

Jessica preserved the police photographs, witness statements, and Michael’s blood test.

She used them whenever he resisted.

Walter looked shattered.

“You told me the employee confessed.”

“Mom told him he’d lose his job if he didn’t.”

Michael’s silence had cost another man his career and allowed Jessica to control the family for years.

He finally provided the victim’s name and agreed to confess.

That same evening, Judge Crane’s office reported that someone had accessed his electronic signature.

He denied approving the custody order delivered to Emily.

The order was forged.

But the county system still recognized it as active.

A transport company had already received authorization to collect Olivia and Megan.

The company was Harbor Ridge.

Emily checked the protective apartment’s exterior camera.

A black vehicle was parked across the street.

The driver was the man Olivia had seen at the restaurant.

👉 The custody order was fraudulent, but the people hired to enforce it were already outside Emily’s door.
