Chapter 10 - THE FINAL INVOICE Rachel called the police.

The patrol unit dispatched to the apartment never arrived.
The county system showed the call had been canceled by a family-services supervisor who claimed the children were already under court protection.
Harbor Ridge controlled more than a transport vehicle.
Someone inside the emergency network was helping them.
Emily turned off every light and moved Olivia and Megan into the bedroom farthest from the street.
“Is Dad coming?” Megan asked.
“No.”
“Grandma?”
“No.”
Olivia stood near the window.
“That’s the same man.”
Emily pulled her away from the glass.
The driver exited the vehicle carrying a leather folder. A woman in a gray suit joined him from another car.
Both wore county identification badges.
Rachel checked the names.
They belonged to real employees who were currently working at another location.
Jessica’s network had copied their credentials.
The building’s front buzzer sounded.
“Emily Parker,” the woman called through the speaker. “We have an emergency order for Olivia and Megan Parker.”
Rachel answered from her own phone.
“The order has been challenged.”
“It remains active until a judge withdraws it.”
“The issuing judge says he never signed it.”
“That concern can be addressed after the children are safe.”
Safe.
The same word every participant used while taking something from them.
Emily’s smartphone displayed an incoming file from the restaurant’s invoice server.
Daniel had scheduled it before his arrest.
The document was titled:
FINAL INVOICE — PARKER FAMILY EVENT
The first pages listed food, decorations, audio equipment, and Harbor Ridge transportation.
The final page listed a service that had never appeared on the paper copy:
Post-event residential transfer — mother and younger child.
Destination:
A private property owned by Jessica.
Olivia was not included because Michael was supposed to take her to Florida.
Emily and Megan were meant to disappear into a facility disguised as a family residence.
Beneath the address appeared a payment authorization.
The money came from the restaurant group.
Olivia’s own company had financed the plan to separate her family.
A second file opened automatically.
Rose Bennett appeared in a recorded message.
“Emily, if this system has released my final invoice, then Jessica has attempted to use Olivia’s ownership against you.”
Emily held the phone closer.
Rose explained that she had created a defensive clause allowing Olivia’s shares to freeze every restaurant account if the child was threatened.
The freeze required Olivia’s verbal confirmation.
Emily looked at her seven-year-old daughter.
“I don’t want to make you responsible for fixing this.”
Olivia stared toward the front door.
“Will it stop them?”
“It should stop their money.”
“But not the people?”
Emily could not lie.
“No.”
Olivia faced the phone and clearly stated that no one had permission to use her company or trust to remove her from her mother.
The restaurant accounts froze.
Across the street, the Harbor Ridge driver checked his phone.
His expression changed.
The woman beside him became furious.
They did not leave.
Instead, they opened the vehicle’s rear doors.
Jessica stepped out.
Michael was beside her with blood on his collar and his wrists bound in front of him.
Emily’s breath stopped.
Jessica pushed him toward the apartment entrance.
Michael shouted something, but the security glass blocked his voice.
Then Olivia’s phone began ringing from inside her backpack.
Emily had never given her a phone.
Olivia removed a small device Jessica had hidden among her crayons during the birthday dinner.
A live video showed Walter sitting alone at the seafood company office.
Behind him stood the restaurant manager, Evan, holding the original trust certificate and a final unsigned document.
Jessica’s voice came through Olivia’s device.
“Open the door, Emily, or Walter signs away every share Rose protected.”
Walter shook his head desperately.
Evan placed a pen between his fingers.
The woman outside the apartment raised the forged custody order toward the security camera.
Heavy footsteps climbed the interior staircase behind Emily.
Someone was already inside the building.
Megan clutched the stained yellow dress she had refused to remove.
A hard object slipped from its torn hem and struck the floor.
A sealed flash drive.
Rose had hidden another file inside the dress before her death.
Emily bent to reach it.
The apartment door unlocked from the hallway.
Olivia whispered:
“Mom… Grandma said the final invoice chooses which daughter stays with you.”
The handle began to turn.
