Chapter 7 - MICHAEL’S CONFESSION Walter admitted the DNA on Megan’s dress was probably his.

Jessica had asked him to hold Megan during the party before dinner. She could have collected saliva from his glass or transferred skin cells from his napkin.
The contamination was calculated.
Walter’s DNA was close enough to Michael’s to create confusion but different enough to suggest another male relative.
Jessica wanted Emily accused of an affair within Michael’s own family.
A paternity scandal would dominate attention while the trust money disappeared.
Walter gave investigators permission to compare his sample.
The match confirmed it.
Jessica had manufactured the result.
Michael asked to meet Emily in person.
She agreed only inside Rachel’s office with two witnesses and a recorder.
He looked exhausted. His expensive suit was wrinkled, and the confidence from the restaurant had vanished.
“I didn’t know Mom planned all of it,” he said.
Emily placed the birthday invoice before him.
“Your signature.”
“She told me it was a catering guarantee.”
The Harbor Ridge contract.
“Your signature.”
“She said it was security in case you caused a scene.”
The airline tickets.
“Your signature.”
“I thought they were business travel.”
The sedative.
“Your hand.”
Michael closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
There was no remaining document to blame for that act.
“I gave it to Megan.”
“You watched her cry after your mother spilled the bowl.”
“Yes.”
“You told me not to embarrass you.”
“Yes.”
“Did you know men were waiting to take them?”
“I knew Harbor Ridge would speak to Olivia.”
“Without me?”
“Yes.”
“Did you plan to board the flight?”
Michael hesitated.
“Yes.”
The confession arrived in pieces because the full truth sounded too monstrous when spoken at once.
He claimed Jessica convinced him that Emily intended to divorce him and use Olivia’s inheritance to destroy Parker Seafood.
She showed him altered messages appearing to come from Emily’s email.
She said the restaurant ownership would allow Emily to remove Walter, fire Michael, and leave the entire family bankrupt.
“So you decided to act first,” Emily said.
“Yes.”
“Did you ever ask me?”
“No.”
“Because you feared my answer?”
“Because Mom had proof.”
“She had documents she created.”
“I know that now.”
Michael offered access to every company account and agreed to testify against Jessica. In exchange, he wanted Emily to delay filing criminal charges related to Megan’s drink until he helped recover the stolen trust money.
“You are bargaining with the harm you caused our daughter.”
“I’m trying to make it right.”
“You can cooperate without buying mercy.”
His face collapsed.
Emily stood.
The meeting was over.
As she reached the door, Michael said something that stopped her.
“My mother isn’t acting alone.”
He had seen Jessica meeting someone inside the restaurant office for months. The man used no name and entered after closing. Michael believed he represented the investment group trying to buy Olivia’s shares.
“Did you see his face?”
“Yes.”
Michael opened his phone and displayed a photograph taken through the office window.
Emily recognized the man.
Rachel did too.
He was Daniel Bennett, Emily’s uncle and the former trustee of Rose Bennett’s estate.
Daniel had been reported dead in a boating accident eighteen months earlier.
His death was the reason Michael gained access to the girls’ trust.
