Chapter 6 - The Anonymous LettersRebecca chose Emma’s name after receiving a letter during pregnancy.
The envelope contained no return address.
Inside, someone had written:
Emma Rose means a life that survives being hidden.
Rebecca thought it was a sentimental message from Charlotte.
Charlotte denied sending it.
Marcus remembered three other anonymous letters arriving during the pregnancy. One warned Rebecca not to allow Lorraine into the delivery room. Another advised storing the baby’s cord blood independently. A third contained the name of an attorney specializing in stolen inheritances.
They had dismissed the letters as strange advertising.
Now they believed Rachel had sent them.
She had watched Rebecca from a distance, protecting a sister who did not know her.
Dr. Ward entered the ICU with new results.
Emma’s head injury remained serious, but the child was showing signs of waking. She moved both hands and responded to Rebecca’s voice.
Rebecca leaned over the bed.
“Emma, baby, squeeze me.”
The small fingers tightened faintly.
Relief spread through the room.
Then the hospital’s legal director arrived with an emergency guardianship order.
Harold and Lorraine had been temporarily detained but not formally charged. Their attorney argued that Rebecca’s emotional distress made her incapable of authorizing major treatment.
The order named Charlotte as emergency guardian.
Charlotte stared at the document.
“I never requested this.”
Her signature appeared at the bottom.
Northgate had captured her handwriting and biometric data during treatment.
The grandparents had built multiple routes toward Emma.
If they could not remain guardians themselves, they would use Charlotte’s identity.
Charlotte signed an affidavit rejecting the appointment.
The judge who issued the order was Harold’s cousin.
Detective Grant filed an immediate challenge.
No final ruling came that night.
While attorneys argued, Nurse Nora discovered a discrepancy in Emma’s hospital chart.
A consent form authorized transfer to Northgate once her condition stabilized.
Rebecca’s electronic signature appeared on it.
The form had been uploaded from the nurses’ station twenty minutes after the oxygen-mask attack.
Someone inside the hospital was still working for the grandparents.
Security reviewed corridor footage.
Josh stood near the nurses’ station during that period, holding Rebecca’s phone.
Rebecca looked at her brother.
“You signed it?”
“No.”
Josh had taken her phone only to give Detective Grant the recording. He placed it on the counter for less than a minute while speaking with security.
A nurse picked it up.
Not Nora.
A second woman wearing the same uniform.
The camera captured only her back.
Nora checked the staff roster.
No other nurse had been assigned to the pediatric ICU.
The impersonator used Rebecca’s unlocked phone to authorize the transfer.
Then another camera showed the woman entering an elevator with Lorraine’s purse.
Lorraine had not brought the purse into the security interview.
Someone removed it from evidence.
Inside were the Northgate invoice, trust papers, and Emma’s data bracelet.
The elevator descended to the hospital morgue.
Detective Grant sent officers downstairs.
They found the purse beside an empty examination table.
A woman lay unconscious in the adjacent room wearing the stolen nursing uniform.
It was Rachel Monroe.
