Chapter 9 - The Woman Who Borrowed FacesLeah surrendered when officers reached the first floor.

She raised both hands and claimed Harold had forced her to participate.

Her face had been partially altered through surgery, fillers, and prosthetics. Without the wig and makeup, she resembled Rachel but not perfectly.

Josh recognized her.

She had worked for Harold’s foundation under the name Linda Shaw.

For ten years, she appeared whenever the family needed a witness, patient, employee, or relative to support a false narrative.

“Why come here?” Detective Grant asked.

“To warn you.”

“After helping steal seventy-four million dollars?”

“I didn’t authorize the transfer.”

The woman using Rachel’s identity at the trust meeting was someone else.

Leah claimed Lorraine had trained two impersonators.

One copied Rachel.

The other copied Rebecca.

The second woman had been used to create videos showing Rebecca neglecting Emma and threatening her parents.

Rebecca’s future criminal case had already been prepared.

Leah handed over a storage address where the videos were edited.

In exchange, she requested protection from Harold.

“He will eliminate everyone who can identify the real Rachel.”

“Harold is in custody.”

Leah laughed.

“The man at the hospital is not Harold.”

Police compared the detained grandfather’s fingerprints against his driver’s-license file.

They matched.

Then Rachel demanded an older source.

The prints on her childhood adoption papers did not match the man in custody.

Harold Bennett’s official identity had been replaced decades earlier.

The grandfather everyone knew may have been another participant in the network.

Charlotte remembered her father recovering from a severe car accident when she was six. Afterward, his voice sounded different for months, and he forgot private family details.

Lorraine said head trauma had changed him.

Maybe the real Harold died in the crash.

Maybe another man assumed his identity.

Rebecca’s family had been built from substitutions.

Detective Grant called the ICU.

Nurse Nora answered, breathless.

The detained Harold had been taken for a medical evaluation after complaining of chest pain.

During transport, he attacked an officer and escaped through the service tunnel.

A hospital employee helped him.

The employee’s badge belonged to Marcus.

Rebecca looked toward her husband through the video call.

Marcus stood at the lakeside cottage beside police.

His badge could not be inside the hospital.

Someone had copied his identity too.

The emergency department camera showed a man wearing Marcus’s clothes and face leading Harold toward the parking structure.

Rebecca stared.

The impersonator’s height, movement, and posture were almost perfect.

Then she noticed the left hand.

Her Marcus wore his wedding ring on the right hand after an old finger injury.

The copy wore it on the left.

They entered a black van.

Emma remained upstairs in the pediatric ICU with Rebecca and Nora.

Then the bedside phone rang.

The false Marcus appeared by video.

Behind him sat Harold.

A third person drove.

Lorraine.

She had escaped the security interview using a medical transport disguise.

“Bring Rachel and the footprint card to Northgate,” Lorraine said.

Rebecca leaned toward the screen.

“Or what?”

Lorraine smiled.

“You think Emma is the only child in that room?”

The camera turned.

Another pediatric hospital bed appeared beside them.

A little girl lay beneath a blanket wearing the same head bandage and oxygen mask as Emma.

She looked almost identical.

Rebecca could not breathe.

Lorraine continued:

“One child fell from the staircase.”

Her smile widened.

“The other was waiting in case she survived.”

👉 The grandparents had prepared a second little girl to assume Emma’s identity if their original plan failed.
