She looked at Rebecca once and began crying.
“You named her Emma.”
Rebecca stood several feet away.
“You sent the letters.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you come to me?”
“Because Harold monitored everyone near you.”
“You could have tried.”
“I did.”
Rachel had approached Rebecca twice.
The first time, Lorraine appeared before she reached the house and warned that Marcus would lose his construction contracts if Rachel interfered.
The second time, Rachel arranged to meet Rebecca at a café.
Harold sent a woman who resembled Rachel instead. The woman behaved erratically and threatened Rebecca.
Rebecca called security and left.
For years afterward, she believed anyone claiming to be a secret sister was dangerous.
Harold used impersonation long before the Northgate attack.
“Who wore your face tonight?” Detective Grant asked.
Rachel knew only one possibility.
Northgate employed a woman named Leah Monroe—no relation—whose facial structure was similar enough for cosmetic alteration. She had impersonated patients during hearings and medical appointments.
Leah could mimic voices after studying recordings.
“She was in Room Thirteen,” Rachel said. “They trained her with videos of me.”
The real Rachel escaped Northgate during the police raid by following a service tunnel. Before she reached the hospital lobby, someone struck her from behind.
She woke in the morgue wearing the nurse’s uniform.
The impersonator had switched places with her.
Detective Grant checked hospital exits.
A woman matching Rachel’s appearance left through the ambulance bay carrying Lorraine’s purse.
She entered a car registered to Josh Bennett.
Josh looked stunned.
“My car is outside.”
Security checked.
His car had been replaced with an identical vehicle bearing cloned plates.
The impersonator’s destination remained unknown.
Rachel explained the inheritance Harold sought.
Her adoptive parents, Daniel and June Monroe, created a trust after learning the adoption had been illegal. They wanted the money to pass to the biological family only if Rachel personally approved.
Harold assumed Emma’s status as first granddaughter would trigger automatic transfer.
It would not.
Rachel had to sign.
“That’s why he kept me alive,” she said.
“He needed you to approve Emma as heir,” Rebecca replied.
“Yes.”
“And you refused.”
“I knew he would control her.”
Harold arranged Rachel’s false death, expecting to produce a forged approval later.
But Rachel hid the trust’s authentication key inside an object no one suspected.
Rebecca looked toward Emma’s bed.
“The bracelet.”
Rachel nodded.
The silver bracelet she sent anonymously after Emma’s birth contained the key beneath the nameplate.
Lorraine removed it during triage because she knew what it held.
The impersonator now had the bracelet.
Without it, Rachel could not unlock the trust or cancel the pending claim.
Marcus asked who could use the key.
“Anyone with my voice, face, and a biological sample.”
Leah had the voice and face.
Lorraine’s purse contained Rachel’s old blood vial from Northgate.
The impostor possessed everything needed to authorize the inheritance.
Detective Grant requested an emergency freeze.
The trust administrator answered from Nashville.
A transfer had already begun.
