PART 6

Vivian was signing the last folder when Benjamin arrived.

He entered without knocking.

That alone told Clara more than the financial records had.

“Mom, my mortgage just got declined!”

Vivian continued writing until the sentence was complete.

She had learned from Arthur that people who interrupt signatures usually fear what is being signed.

Genevieve rushed behind him.

“You can’t just cut us off!”

Vivian lifted her eyes.

“You told me I wasn’t invited.”

Benjamin threw both hands out.

“To dinner!”

“To a dinner I paid for.”

Genevieve stepped toward the desk.

“That was a seating issue.”

Vivian looked at her.

“No.”

“It was a truth issue.”

Clara shifted slightly, positioning herself between Genevieve and the folders.

Benjamin noticed.

His face darkened.

“Clara, this is family business.”

Clara held her tablet.

“It is bank business when authorizations are involved.”

Genevieve pointed at Vivian.

“You are punishing us because your feelings were hurt.”

Vivian smiled faintly.

“My feelings were hurt many years ago.”

“This is accounting.”

Benjamin’s voice cracked.

“You know I need those payments.”

“No.”

“I know you use them.”

“There is a difference.”

Genevieve laughed bitterly.

“So what?”

“You want us homeless?”

Vivian looked at Benjamin.

“I want you honest.”

He looked away.

That small movement told her everything.

She opened the largest folder.

“Your mortgage will not be paid by me again.”

“Your staff will not be paid by me again.”

“Your cars, memberships, trips, insurance, shopping accounts, and private invoices will not be paid by me again.”

Benjamin lowered his voice.

“Mom, people are watching.”

Vivian glanced around the private office.

Clara.

Two assistants near the glass door.

A security guard just outside.

Good.

Let them watch.

She looked back at her son.

“You were comfortable letting people watch me be excluded from a dinner I funded.”

“Now let them watch you fund your own life.”

Genevieve’s mouth trembled with fury.

Benjamin looked at Clara’s tablet.

“All 174?”

Clara nodded.

“All 174 authorizations are canceled.”

The number landed in the room like a verdict.
