PART 7
Genevieve made the first real mistake.
She reached for the folder.
Not dramatically.
Just quickly enough to reveal instinct.
Clara stepped forward.
“Mrs. Kelley, do not touch bank documents.”
Genevieve froze.
Vivian watched her hand hover above the desk.
That hand had selected Vivian’s dinner flowers.
That hand had waved away Vivian from the seating chart.
That hand now reached for the proof of what she was losing.
Benjamin whispered, “Genevieve.”
She turned on him.
“Fix this.”
The word was sharp.
Not please.
Not help.
Fix.
Vivian almost felt sorry for him.
Almost.
Benjamin looked at his mother.
“Can we discuss a transition?”
Vivian leaned back.
“There it is.”
“What?”
“The word people use when they want the money to continue long enough for them to pretend it stopped naturally.”
Genevieve’s face flushed.
“You are seventy-seven.”
Clara’s eyes widened.
Benjamin closed his eyes.
Vivian tilted her head.
“Yes.”
“I am.”
Genevieve stepped closer.
“You cannot expect to manage all this forever.”
Vivian’s voice cooled.
“Manage all what?”
“Our family structure.”
Vivian smiled.
“My dear, I have managed more by breakfast than you have paid for in ten years.”
Clara looked down at the tablet to hide her expression.
Genevieve’s anger sharpened into panic.
“Benjamin, say something.”
Benjamin looked at Vivian.
“Mom, please.”
That word.
Please.
It arrived too late.
Not after gratitude.
Not after respect.
Only after decline notices.
Vivian opened another folder.
“There is more.”
Benjamin went still.
“What more?”
“I requested a review of every authorization attached to my accounts.”
“Several were modified without my written approval.”
Genevieve’s face changed.
Benjamin turned slowly toward her.
“What does she mean?”
Vivian looked at Clara.
Clara took a breath.
“Three authorizations were submitted with electronic approvals that do not match Mrs. Kelley’s usual authentication history.”
Benjamin looked at Genevieve.
She swallowed.
“It was administrative.”
Vivian’s eyes did not move.
“It was fraud.”
The room went silent.

Even the fireplace seemed quieter.
