PART 8

The three fraudulent authorizations changed everything.

The first was for Genevieve’s personal stylist.

Eight thousand dollars a month.

The second was for a private wellness clinic.

Twenty-two thousand dollars paid in advance.

The third was for a luxury renovation consultant tied to Benjamin and Genevieve’s house.

Fifty-one thousand dollars.

Vivian had never approved any of them.

She had not even known they existed.

Genevieve tried to explain.

“You would have said yes.”

Vivian looked at her.

“Then why not ask?”

Genevieve said nothing.

Benjamin looked sick.

Not because his mother had been used.

Because his wife had made the mess harder to clean.

Clara tapped the tablet.

“The bank has initiated internal review.”

Genevieve’s voice rose.

“You said this would remain private.”

Clara’s face became perfectly professional.

“No, Mrs. Kelley.”

“I said the office is private.”

“Fraud review is not.”

Benjamin turned to Vivian.

“Mom, don’t do this.”

Vivian looked at him for a long moment.

There he was.

The little boy with apple money.

The man who let his wife steal from his mother.

The son who had uninvited her from the dinner she paid for.

All true.

All in the same face.

“What exactly should I not do?”

“Ruin us.”

Vivian’s voice softened.

“You keep saying that as if I am the one who spent the money.”

Genevieve snapped.

“You have more than enough.”

Vivian stood then.

Slowly.

With one hand on the desk.

Not weak.

Deliberate.

The room straightened around her.

“I have enough because I did not confuse wanting with deserving.”

Genevieve’s mouth closed.

Vivian walked to the window.

Outside, the city moved under cold daylight.

She thought of Arthur.

How he wrote every expense in a ledger until the end.

How he once told Benjamin, “Never borrow from someone you plan to disrespect.”

Benjamin had laughed.

Vivian had not.

She turned back.

“Benjamin, I will cover thirty days of essential medical insurance for your household.”

His face lifted.

“Thank you.”

She raised one finger.

“Do not thank me yet.”

“Nothing else.”

“No mortgage.”

“No staff.”

“No cars.”

“No club.”

“No credit cards.”

“No legal help for fraud.”

Genevieve shouted, “You’re choosing money over family!”

Vivian’s answer was immediate.

“No.”
