PART 9

The collapse took one week.

That was all.

One week without Vivian’s money and the beautiful life began shedding paint.

The housekeeper quit when payroll failed.

The club suspended Genevieve’s account.

The mortgage company demanded immediate payment.

The car dealer called about repossession.

The wine vault sent a formal notice.

The private school asked why Genevieve’s niece’s tuition had been linked to Vivian Kelley at all.

Benjamin stopped sleeping.

Genevieve stopped pretending.

On the fourth day, she called Vivian fourteen times.

Vivian answered none.

On the fifth day, Benjamin came alone to Vivian’s house.

That surprised her.

He stood at the front gate in the rain without an umbrella.

The security camera showed him looking smaller than he had in years.

Vivian almost buzzed him in.

Then remembered the dinner.

Not the uninvitation.

The caption.

So grateful for the family we choose.

She answered through the intercom.

“What do you need, Benjamin?”

His voice cracked through the speaker.

“To talk.”

“About repayment?”

Silence.

“About Mom and son.”

Vivian closed her eyes.

Pain moved through her chest.

Not medical.

Older.

“Benjamin, when you wanted a mother, you called after the money failed.”

“That tells me what you came for.”

He looked directly at the camera.

“I messed up.”

“Yes.”

“Genevieve pushed—”

“No.”

Vivian’s voice sharpened.

“You are not a boy hiding behind your wife.”

He lowered his head.

Rain darkened his suit.

For the first time, he did not argue.

“I let it happen.”

“You benefited from it.”

“Yes.”

The word surprised them both.

Vivian leaned closer to the speaker.

“Do you understand why I canceled everything?”

“Because I hurt you.”

“That is part of it.”

He looked up.

“Because I stole from you.”

Vivian breathed out slowly.

Finally.

Not full truth.

But a door.

“Because you forgot that my love was not an account with your name on it.”

Benjamin wiped his face.

Rain or tears.

She could not tell.

“Can I come in?”

Vivian looked toward Arthur’s empty chair.

Then at the locked gate.

“No.”

His face broke.

May you like

“Not today.”
