Chapter 6 - THE COMPLETE RECORDING Julia knew of only one person who could remotely access Anna’s archive.
Dr. Nolan Pierce.
Pierce had served as Alpine House’s consulting psychiatrist. After the center closed, he became director of a respected pediatric trauma clinic in Denver.
He also treated Caleb after Anna’s death.
Caleb remembered sitting in Pierce’s office week after week while the doctor explained that trauma created false associations and misplaced blame.
Whenever Caleb questioned his parents, Pierce encouraged forgiveness.
“He was protecting them,” Caleb said.
Julia nodded.
“He designed the medication protocol.”
Mara issued a warrant for Pierce’s clinic.
Before officers arrived, the doctor called Caleb directly.
“Your mother made terrible choices,” Pierce said. “But Anna’s investigation became dangerous.”
“You treated me to make me doubt my own memories.”
“I treated severe childhood trauma.”
“You drugged Lily.”
Silence followed.
Then Pierce replied, “I prescribed a mild sedative for sleep. I did not authorize freezer confinement.”
“You gave the prescription to Richard.”
“I believed Lily was experiencing grief-related episodes.”
“You knew exactly what Evelyn did to children.”
Pierce’s voice hardened.
“You are hearing one side of a complicated history.”
“There is no complicated version of locking a child in a freezer.”
Pierce ended the call.
Police entered his clinic minutes later. The building was empty, but his office computer contained surveillance photographs of Caleb, Lily, Anna, and Julia.
Anna’s file included a complete version of the recording recovered from the cabin.
Mara played it for Caleb.
The video began inside Anna’s car two days before her death.
She looked exhausted and frightened.
“Caleb, I need to say this clearly. Your parents are preparing to take Lily, but they are not acting alone. Nolan Pierce controls the guardianship network. Evelyn supplies behavioral evidence. Richard moves money. Owen Vale handles the court.”
Anna paused.
“I did not tell you sooner because Nolan convinced me your childhood memories were too unstable. I believed exposing the truth suddenly might destroy you.”
Caleb felt anger cut through grief.
Even Anna had allowed Pierce to decide what truth he could survive.
The recording continued.
“There is something else. Lily saw Evelyn place another child inside the cold room at Alpine House.”
Caleb leaned toward the screen.
“What child?”
Anna answered as though hearing him.
“A boy named Mason Mercer. Julia’s son.”
Mason had not been transferred out of state as Julia believed.
He remained at Alpine House under a changed identity and became part of Pierce’s long-term research.
Anna found recent medical records proving he was alive.
She planned to bring Julia to him.
The video froze before revealing the location.
A password prompt appeared.
Pierce had encrypted the final section after gaining access to Anna’s archive.
Mara’s technicians searched his files for the key.
Instead they found a live security feed.
Lily sat inside a hospital playroom under child-protection supervision.
A male orderly entered carrying a cup of cocoa.
Caleb stood so quickly his chair overturned.
