Chapter 8 - RICHARD’S BARGAIN Caleb refused to bring Lily anywhere near Richard.

Mara arranged a recorded interview instead.
Richard sat handcuffed inside a federal holding room. Without Evelyn beside him, he appeared smaller—but not remorseful.
“Where is Anna?” Caleb asked through the glass.
Richard glanced toward the camera.
“Clear Summit moved her.”
“So she survived the crash.”
“Yes.”
Caleb gripped the table until his knuckles whitened.
“Did you cause it?”
“I damaged the tire sensor. The warning should have forced her to stop.”
The same defense Grant had used in another kind of family crime: harm was intended to remain controlled.
“What happened after the car left the road?”
“Nolan reached her first.”
“And the body?”
Richard looked away.
“A deceased patient from Alpine House. Similar age and dental structure.”
Caleb felt the room spin.
They had replaced Anna with another woman, cremated the evidence, and allowed Lily to grieve a mother who remained alive somewhere.
“Why keep her alive?”
“She had copied account keys Nolan needed.”
“Why didn’t she escape?”
“She tried.”
Richard claimed Anna suffered a head injury and months of drug-induced confusion. Pierce told her Caleb and Lily had died in another accident.
When she began remembering, they transferred her under new identities.
“Where is she now?”
“I don’t know the current site.”
“You said you could reveal it.”
“I know who does.”
“Who?”
“Lily.”
Caleb stared.
Richard explained that Anna encoded the location inside a song she taught Lily before the crash. Pierce discovered the existence of the code but could never make Lily complete it correctly.
That was why Evelyn began the freezer sessions.
They wanted Lily to “remember properly.”
The cold was intended to force her to sing the final verse.
Caleb returned to Lily under the supervision of a child specialist.
He did not mention Anna being alive.
Instead, he asked whether her mother had taught her a special song.
Lily nodded.
“It’s about mountains.”
She sang softly:
“Blue sky over silver stone,
Follow where the pine winds moan,
Three lights low and one light high,
Find the place the birds don’t fly.”
The first letters formed BFTF—meaningless at first.
Julia recognized the imagery.
Clear Summit owned four mountain properties. One sat below a communications tower with three red lights low and one white beacon high.
A rehabilitation lodge near Black Feather Trail.
BFTF.
Police obtained a search warrant.
Before the raid, Evelyn requested an interview.
She had remained in county custody, denying everything. Now she claimed Richard had misled her about Anna.
“I believed Nolan relocated her temporarily,” Evelyn said.
“You helped replace her body.”
“I signed forms.”
“You locked Lily in a freezer to obtain the location.”
“I was trying to rescue Anna.”
Caleb stared at his mother.
“You tortured a child and called it rescue.”
“I knew Lily had the code.”
“She is six.”
“She is also the only person Anna trusted.”
Evelyn insisted Pierce was the true architect. She offered access to the lodge through an old Alpine security system.
Mara accepted the codes but gave her nothing in return.
The raid began shortly before midnight.
Officers entered the Black Feather lodge and found twelve empty patient rooms.
The pharmacy refrigerator remained cold. Dinner trays were still warm.
Everyone had been moved minutes earlier.
In the final room, Caleb found Anna’s wedding ring on a bedside table.
Beside it lay a recent drawing of Lily.
On the back, Anna had written:
Caleb is alive. Nolan lied. Follow the freezer trucks.

Outside, heavy tire tracks led away through fresh snow.
👉 Caleb reached the lodge too late, but Anna’s message proved she had recovered her memory and was trying to lead him toward Pierce’s next location.
