Chapter 9 - THE FREEZER TRUCKS Clear Summit owned three refrigerated medical-transport vehicles.

Two were parked at registered facilities.

The third had disappeared from GPS tracking the moment police approached Black Feather Lodge.

State patrol cameras captured it traveling south toward an abandoned distribution center outside Colorado Springs.

Caleb rode with Mara while Julia remained under protection with Lily.

During the drive, Mara explained what they had learned from Alpine’s financial records.

Pierce funded his network through private guardianships. He targeted children connected to trusts, settlements, or valuable estates. Once caregivers were declared unstable, Pierce’s foundations gained authority over medical decisions and finances.

Evelyn created behavioral evidence.

Richard managed accounts.

Owen Vale controlled legal filings.

The cold treatment was both punishment and proof: children emerged confused, frightened, and physically distressed, allowing Pierce to diagnose severe disorders.

Anna threatened all of it.

Caleb asked why his parents had agreed to destroy their own family.

“Power becomes ordinary to people who use it long enough,” Mara said. “Eventually they call resistance illness.”

The refrigerated truck stood inside the distribution center when officers arrived.

Its rear doors were locked.

Caleb heard pounding from within.

Police cut the chain.

Cold vapor rolled across the concrete as the doors opened.

Six adults lay inside under blankets, drugged but alive.

Julia’s son Mason was among them.

Anna was not.

Mason regained consciousness inside an ambulance. He recognized Caleb immediately.

“Your wife said you would come.”

“Where is she?”

“Nolan took her through the lower tunnel.”

The distribution center connected to an old military storage system beneath the highway. Pierce had used the refrigerated truck as a decoy while moving Anna through underground service roads.

Mason described the network’s final site: a former government research bunker converted into a private neurological clinic.

Pierce called it Stillwater.

Only Owen Vale knew the legal property name.

Mara’s agents traced Vale to a hotel near Denver International Airport. He was preparing to leave the country.

They arrested him in the lobby.

Vale demanded immunity.

He admitted forging custody orders and helping conceal Anna’s survival, but claimed Pierce kept evidence that could destroy judges, doctors, and public officials across three states.

“Where is Stillwater?” Mara asked.

Vale gave coordinates near a decommissioned reservoir.

Then he looked at Caleb.

“Pierce wants you there.”

“Why?”

“Because Anna stopped cooperating after she learned Lily survived.”

“What does he need from me?”

“Your consent.”

Caleb laughed bitterly.

“For what?”

Vale placed a document on the table.

It was a guardianship transfer dated twenty-seven years earlier.

Young Caleb Foster had been legally declared incapable after his Alpine confinement.

Pierce—not Richard—became temporary controller of a childhood trust funded by Caleb’s grandfather.

The order was never revoked.

Under the buried legal structure, Pierce still claimed authority over Caleb’s medical decisions and inherited assets.

Anna discovered this before the crash.

She had been trying to restore Caleb’s legal identity.

“If Pierce gets your signature,” Vale said, “he can make every modern transfer look voluntary.”

“And if I refuse?”

Vale glanced at the coordinates.

“He has Anna.”

Caleb studied the map.

The bunker sat beneath a reservoir whose emergency spillway could flood the lower levels within minutes.

Pierce had chosen a place he could erase.

👉 Stillwater held Anna and the records capable of restoring Caleb’s stolen legal identity—but Pierce had built the facility beneath enough water to bury them all.
