PART 1
“She looked through the bathroom door after thirty-five years… and finally saw the scars he had hidden to protect her.”
Eleanor Mitchell woke at 4:17 a.m. because the bathroom light was on again.
It had been on every morning of their marriage.
Always before sunrise.
Always behind a locked door.
Always with the water running just loud enough to hide whatever Richard did inside.
For thirty-five years, Eleanor had respected that door.
This morning, she did not.
The lock had not clicked properly.
The door stood open by less than an inch.
Cold blue dawn light spilled across the hallway.
Eleanor stepped closer in her pale blue nightgown, one hand on the wall, already knowing something was wrong.
Then she saw him.
Richard sat shirtless on a wooden stool beside the sink.
His gray head was bowed.
His shoulders shook.
And his back was covered in scars.
Not one.
Not two.
Dozens.
Long white lines crossing old raised wounds.
Deep marks running from shoulder blade to waist.
Burn scars near the ribs.
A body that had once been broken and then hidden beneath buttoned shirts, dim bedrooms, and thirty-five years of silence.
Eleanor’s hand flew to her mouth.
“Richard…”
Her voice broke.
“What did they do to you?”
Richard froze.
The cloth in his hand dropped into the sink.
For a moment, he did not turn.
He only stared at himself in the mirror like a man seeing the past standing behind him.
“I told you not to look.”
Eleanor stepped into the bathroom.
Her bare feet touched the cold tile.
“You carried this alone for thirty-five years?”
Richard finally lifted his eyes to the mirror.
They were wet.
Tired.
Afraid in a way Eleanor had never seen before.
“Because if you knew, they would have come for you.”
The words entered the room like a ghost.
Eleanor reached toward his scarred back, but stopped before touching him.
All the years returned at once.
The locked bathroom.
The nightmares.
The way he flinched when someone knocked too hard.
The way he never removed his shirt near bright light.
The way he always said, “Some things are better left sleeping.”
Eleanor’s shock hardened into something fierce.
She placed her hand gently on his shoulder.
Richard closed his eyes like the touch hurt and healed him at the same time.
Eleanor leaned close.
Her voice was quiet.
May you like
“Not anymore.”
