PART 8

The Garrisons came to the house on a Friday.

They sent lawyers first.

Then a black car.

Then Charles Garrison himself stepped onto the porch wearing a navy coat and his father’s smile.

Eleanor opened the door before Richard could stop her.

Charles looked surprised to see her standing there.

“Mrs. Mitchell.”

“Mr. Garrison.”

His eyes moved past her.

“Is Richard available?”

Eleanor smiled.

“No.”

Charles’s smile thinned.

“My attorneys have been trying to resolve a historical ownership matter.”

“Yes.”

“You threatened my husband.”

He blinked.

“I beg your pardon?”

Eleanor stepped onto the porch and closed the door behind her.

Snow began falling lightly.

She was eighty years old, wrapped in a gray coat, white hair pinned back, voice calm enough to frighten anyone paying attention.

“You sent a photograph of me walking into church.”

Charles’s eyes sharpened.

“A courtesy reminder that we are aware of the parties involved.”

“Thirty-five years ago, your father used similar reminders while my husband was being tortured.”

The word landed.

Tortured.

Charles looked toward the car.

His lawyer stepped forward.

“This conversation is inappropriate.”

Eleanor looked at him.

“You are Martin Vale.”

The lawyer froze.

“Your father was Paul Mercer’s counsel.”

“You knew.”

His face changed.

Only slightly.

Enough.

The front door opened behind Eleanor.

Margaret stepped out with Detective Reeves and two federal agents.

Charles stopped smiling.

Margaret held up a folder.

“Charles Garrison, we need to speak with you regarding extortion, witness intimidation, conspiracy, and a reopened kidnapping investigation.”

Charles laughed.

“You cannot reopen a dead story.”

Richard appeared in the doorway then.

Not hiding.

Not fully strong.

But standing.

His robe had been replaced by a dark sweater.

His face was pale.

His eyes were clear.

“It isn’t dead.”

Charles stared at him.

Richard took Eleanor’s hand.

“I survived it.”

Eleanor looked at Charles.

“And this time, he does not have to survive it alone.”

The agents escorted Charles away from the porch.

For thirty-five years, the Garrisons had been a shadow in Eleanor’s marriage.

That morning, for the first time, the shadow had a name and a case number.
