PART 3

Richard tried to stand.

His knees failed him.

Eleanor caught his arm before he could fall from the stool.

“Don’t,” she whispered.

“Please.”

He stayed seated, breathing hard.

Age had made him smaller.

But the scars made him look young again in the cruelest way.

Like she was seeing the man he had been when they were made.

Richard reached for his robe.

Eleanor stopped him gently.

“No more hiding from me.”

His face crumpled.

“I wanted to keep you untouched by it.”

“By what?”

He stared at the sink.

The water dripped steadily.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Then he said the name Eleanor had not heard in decades.

“Garrison.”

Her blood went cold.

Thomas Garrison had been her first husband’s business partner.

Powerful.

Polished.

Dangerous behind closed doors.

After Eleanor’s first husband died, Garrison tried to seize control of the shipping company her father left her.

Richard had found irregularities.

Hidden debt.

Fake signatures.

Insurance fraud.

Money moving through shell accounts.

He warned Eleanor not to sign anything Garrison sent.

Then he disappeared.

Eleanor gripped the sink.

“Thomas did this?”

Richard shook his head.

“Not with his own hands.”

“He never dirtied his own hands.”

The bathroom seemed smaller.

Richard’s voice became rough.

“I had documents.”

“Enough to put him away.”

“I was bringing them to the district attorney.”

“They took me from the parking garage.”

Eleanor covered her mouth again.

He continued because stopping now would kill him.

“They kept me in a warehouse near the docks.”

“Three weeks.”

Eleanor made a sound.

Richard closed his eyes.

“They wanted the documents.”

“I had hidden the originals.”

“They wanted me to sign a statement saying you ordered the fraud.”

“What?”

“They planned to destroy you.”

“Your company.”

“Your name.”

“Your freedom.”

Eleanor shook her head.

“No.”

Richard looked at her then.

“They showed me photographs of you leaving your office.”

“Your house.”

“The grocery store.”

“They said if I came back and told you, they would make sure the next body found in the water was yours.”

Eleanor’s knees weakened.

Richard whispered, “So I came home.”

“I married you.”

May you like

“And I kept my mouth shut.”
