PART 5

Eleanor walked to the office in her nightgown.

Richard followed slowly in his robe, one hand braced against the wall.

Every step seemed to cost him pride.

Eleanor hated that.

Not his weakness.

The fact that he believed weakness had to be hidden from her.

The oak desk sat beneath the window facing the garden.

Richard unlocked the bottom drawer with a tiny brass key taped beneath the lamp.

Inside was a metal box.

Inside the box were envelopes.

Photographs.

Carbon copies.

Bank ledgers.

Tape recordings.

A list of names.

And a folded medical report from a clinic in Vermont dated December 1989.

Eleanor picked it up.

Richard tried to stop her.

She gave him one look.

He let go.

The report described injuries.

Fractured ribs.

Burns.

Lacerations.

Dehydration.

Repeated blunt-force trauma.

Eleanor read until the words blurred.

Then she placed the paper down with great care.

If she moved too quickly, grief might become rage before she knew where to put it.

Richard sat in the leather chair.

“I wanted to go to the police when you were safe.”

“Then Garrison died.”

“Two of the men disappeared.”

“One became a judge.”

“One became a congressman.”

“One married into the district attorney’s family.”

Eleanor looked up.

“And you thought justice was impossible.”

“I thought justice would make you a target again.”

She opened another envelope.

Inside were photographs from 1989.

Her office.

Her car.

Her front porch.

She saw herself younger, unaware, smiling as she carried groceries.

A stranger’s camera had followed her while Richard was being tortured.

Eleanor’s hand shook.

Richard noticed.

“I am sorry.”

She turned toward him.

“For what?”

“For making decisions for you.”

That stopped her.

Because that was the wound beneath every other wound.

He had saved her.

He had also taken her choice.

Eleanor crossed the room and knelt in front of him.

His eyes filled.

“I was afraid you would hate me.”

She took his scarred hand.

“I hate what they did.”

“I hate that you were alone.”

“But I have loved you for thirty-five years.”

Her voice hardened.
