Chapter 2

Claire had bought the roses herself.

Not through an assistant.

Not through the hospital florist.

She wanted the gesture to feel personal.

Lily had always loved pale pink roses when they were girls.

Before jealousy.

Before money.

Before Ethan.

Before family dinners where Lily’s jokes cut just deep enough to leave Claire wondering whether she had imagined the cruelty.

When Lily went into labor, Claire was the first person to wire money for the private room upgrade.

She paid for the specialist.

The recovery suite.

The overnight nurse.

The car service Ethan said was “unnecessary but generous.”

Claire had done it because the baby was innocent.

Because Lily was her sister.

Because family, no matter how damaged, still pulled at something inside her.

She did not know Ethan would be there.

He told Claire he had a late meeting with investors.

His voice on the phone had been smooth.

Tired.

Plausible.

Claire had almost said, “Come with me.”

Then she stopped.

Something had changed in their marriage over the past year.

Ethan no longer asked where she was going.

He asked what she was signing.

A trust amendment.

A marital asset access form.

A transfer authorization.

A harmless restructuring.

That was the phrase he loved most.

Harmless.

Claire had inherited protected family wealth after her father died, but the money sat behind layers of trustees, legal restrictions, and old Bennett safeguards Ethan never fully understood.

Tomorrow, he expected her to sign one more document.
