Chapter 3

Lily had always been good at needing help.
As a child, she cried before punishment arrived.
As a teenager, she borrowed clothes and returned them stained.
As an adult, she borrowed money and called it temporary.
Claire forgave her too often.
That was Claire’s flaw.
She mistook exhaustion for love.
Their mother used to say, “Lily is sensitive. You’re strong, Claire. Be patient.”
Strong became another word for available.
Patient became another word for silent.
When Claire married Ethan, Lily cried at the reception and said she was losing her best friend.
Claire hugged her.
Ethan watched them both.
Now Claire understood he had been watching more than sisterly grief.
He had been measuring access.
Lily knew the family trust.
Ethan knew the marriage.
Together, they believed they had found a door.
Claire stood in the corridor outside Room 614 and listened to them speak beside a newborn like betrayal was a business plan.
The baby made a small sound against Lily’s chest.
Lily adjusted the blanket gently.
That was what made it worse.
She could hold a child with care while planning to ruin her sister without blinking.
Claire’s heart broke in two directions at once.
For the marriage.
For the sisterhood.
Then her mind sharpened.
Pain could wait.

Evidence could not.
