Chapter 4

Ethan had entered Claire’s life during a charity audit.
He was charming then.
Not too charming.
That was the trick.
He listened more than he spoke.
Remembered small details.
Brought coffee without asking.
Asked about her father’s old foundation with a careful respect that made Claire feel seen instead of studied.
He proposed after eighteen months.
He cried when she said yes.
At least, she thought he cried.
Now, standing outside Lily’s hospital room, Claire replayed every moment differently.
The way Ethan asked about trustees.
The way he insisted marriage should mean “no walls between us.”
The way he became irritated when Naomi reviewed every document before Claire signed.
The way he laughed and called Naomi “your guard dog.”
Claire had smiled then.
Naomi had not.
“People who love you will not be offended by protection,” Naomi once said.
Claire had defended Ethan.
“He just wants us to feel like partners.”
Naomi replied, “A partner does not pressure you to remove safeguards your father put in place before he died.”
Tomorrow’s document was supposed to be simple.
Ethan said it would streamline access for shared investments.
Claire now knew what it was meant to do.
Maybe not all of it.
Not yet.
But enough.
Once she signs tomorrow, we disappear together.
Claire looked through the glass at Ethan’s hand resting possessively on Lily’s hospital bed.

Then she pressed record.
