Chapter 6

Claire entered Room 614 with a smile that cost her more than any signature ever had.
Ethan jerked upright.
His face changed too quickly.
Surprise.
Fear.
Then performance.
“Claire,” he said, too brightly. “I thought you were downstairs.”
Lily tightened her arms around the baby.
The secret confidence on her face flickered.
Claire saw it.
Then ignored it.
She placed the damaged bouquet beside the hospital bed and looked at the newborn.
The baby was beautiful.
Tiny.
Soft.
Unaware of money, lies, trusts, signatures, or adults who used love as leverage.
Claire’s heart twisted.
“Congratulations,” she said. “Tomorrow should be unforgettable.”
Ethan studied her face.
Lily studied the flowers.
Neither knew the phone was still recording behind the bouquet.
The room became a stage.
Claire let them believe they still held the script.
Ethan cleared his throat.
“We were just talking about paperwork.”
Claire looked at him gently.
“Were you?”
Lily forced a weak laugh.
“Ethan was only helping me understand hospital bills.”
Claire tilted her head.
“That sounds like Ethan.”
The sentence was harmless on the surface.
Underneath, it was a blade.
Ethan did not know whether she meant it.
That uncertainty was the first punishment she allowed herself.
Not revenge.
Not exposure.

Just the smallest return of control.
