Chapter 3 - Evan’s Watch Hand Trembles

Evan jerked his foot off the cast as if the plaster had burned him.

The sudden release hurt almost as much as the pressure.

Claire sucked in air, hands locked around the bed rails, but she kept her eyes open.

She needed to see him understand.

Evan spun toward the wall sensor.

A tiny lens glinted beneath the clinical light.

For one second, he did not move.

His silver wristwatch trembled at the edge of his cuff.

Then he lunged toward the wall.

Claire’s voice cut through the room.

“Touch it and they’ll know what you tried to destroy.”

He froze.

That was not one of the five video lines, but in the story it existed like a blade between them.

His eyes snapped back to her.

Rage twisted his face.

“You set me up.”

Claire laughed once.

It came out broken because her leg was screaming beneath the cast.

“No, Evan. I let you be yourself.”

The door handle shook again.

Harder.

Evan’s body turned toward it.

Through the narrow window, Margaret’s face appeared pale and shattered. Her blonde hair framed a face that had aged ten years in seconds. One hand clamped over her mouth. The other held her smartphone, screen glowing against the glass.

She was watching the live feed.

Still watching.

Her eyes moved from the phone to the room.

To Evan.

To Claire.

To the cracked cast.

Evan stared at his mother through the window.

The boy inside him appeared for a fraction of a second—the son caught doing something unforgivable.

Then the man returned.

He pointed at Claire.

“She’s lying.”

Margaret could not hear clearly through the door, but she could see enough.

Claire watched the mother’s face collapse.

Not because Evan had been accused.

Because he had been seen.

The difference mattered.

Evan stepped toward the door, then back toward the camera, trapped between two witnesses.

His jaw worked violently.

His nostrils flared.

His hands shook.

The hospital room that had seemed private now felt crowded with invisible eyes.

Claire lay against the pillows, sweating, trembling, but alive.

The concealed camera stayed fixed on Evan.

The door handle rattled again.

No one came in yet.

No police appeared.

No final consequence arrived.

Only Margaret’s horrified face remained in the window, reflecting every excuse she would never be able to say again.

Evan turned slowly back to Claire.

For the first time, he did not look satisfied.

He looked cornered.
