Chapter 5 - The Cast He Tried to Break

The cast was cracked.

Not shattered apart.

Not destroyed.

But marked.

A pale line ran along the thick white plaster where Evan’s heel had pressed down and ground in.

Claire stared at that line for a second too long.

Evan saw her looking and followed her gaze.

His face tightened.

Evidence.

That was what frightened him now.

Not her pain.

Not his mother’s tears.

Not the possibility that he had damaged her healing.

Evidence.

The cast held the shape of what he had done.

The camera had watched.

The live feed had carried the sound.

Margaret had seen enough.

Evan moved toward the bed again.

Claire’s body stiffened instantly.

Margaret pounded once against the door window.

Evan stopped.

That sound changed him.

Not because it hurt.

Because it reminded him she was there.

Claire’s mother-in-law had become a witness he could not dismiss as hysterical, bitter, unstable, or vengeful.

Margaret was his own blood.

His own defender.

His safest audience.

Now she stood outside the locked door with a phone in her hand and horror on her face.

Evan’s eyes darted toward the lock.

Then the camera.

Then the IV controller.

Claire slid her thumb away from the hidden button so he could not see exactly where it was.

Too late, perhaps.

But habit kept her careful.

Evan’s voice dropped.

“You don’t know what you’ve done.”

Claire’s lips trembled.

“I know exactly what I stopped.”

His face twisted.

“You think this makes you safe?”

“No.”

She looked toward Margaret.

“But it makes me less alone.”

That struck him.

He hated witnesses more than accusations.

He hated being watched by someone he could not immediately control.

Claire had spent months learning that about him.

After the crash, he became generous in public. He adjusted her pillows when nurses entered. He called her brave. He kissed her forehead when Margaret stood nearby. He described the accident as tragic, unavoidable, confusing.

Privately, he stood too close to the bed.

Moved things out of reach.

Whispered that no one wanted the truth because the truth made people responsible.

Tonight, he had believed the locked door returned the world to its proper size.

Only him.

Only her.

Only fear.

But the room was larger than he knew.

The camera lens glinted again.

Margaret’s phone trembled at the door.

The handle turned once more, harder this time.

Evan’s breathing became uneven.

Claire watched panic take root.

Not enough to finish anything.

Enough to prove the trap had closed.
