Chapter 8 - They Already Heard Every Word

Claire had chosen that sentence carefully.
They already heard every word.
Not she.
Not your mother.
Not police.
Not lawyers.
They.
A word large enough for Evan’s imagination to wound him.
Who heard?
Margaret?
Hospital security?
A doctor?
A lawyer?
Someone else?
The uncertainty did more than a name could.
It made him look around the room like invisible people stood between the IV pole and the bed.
Claire’s face remained twisted with pain, but her eyes stayed steady.
She had learned from him.
Never give a cruel person the whole map.
Let him fear the dark corners.
Evan’s silver wristwatch flashed as he lifted one hand to his hair, then dropped it quickly, realizing the gesture looked panicked.
Too late.
Claire saw.
The camera saw.
Margaret saw.
The wall sensor pivoted slightly again, tracking movement.
Evan noticed and recoiled as if it had lunged at him.
Claire almost smiled.
Not from joy.
From exhaustion.
This was how he had made her live: flinching at tiny changes, reading angles, guessing danger from tone, watching hands.
Now he was learning the room.
The monitor’s rhythm began to settle as Evan stayed farther from the bed.
Claire felt pain throb through the cast, but the immediate terror eased enough for thought to sharpen.
She looked toward the door.
Margaret was still there.
Phone in hand.
Tears on her face.
The handle turned again.
Evan whispered, “Who’s outside?”
Claire said nothing.
His head snapped toward her.
“Who did you call?”
She swallowed.
Her throat hurt.
“Everyone I needed to.”
His face drained further.
That was not an answer.
It was worse.
He turned toward the door again, then toward the camera, then toward Claire.
The old Evan would have known what to do with one witness.
Charm Margaret.
Threaten Claire.
Break the device.
Control the story.
But three points of truth created a triangle he could not escape without choosing which lie to tell first.
He looked at the cracked cast.
The cast looked back in its own way.
White plaster.
New fracture.
Fresh pressure mark.
Claire’s body remembered.
The camera remembered.
Margaret remembered.
The door handle shook again, urgent and unanswered.
Evan stepped backward until his shoulder hit the wall beneath the framed art.
May you like
For the first time in years, he looked smaller than the room.
