Chapter 6 - The Wall Sensor

The concealed camera looked harmless.
That was why it worked.
Small.
Rounded.
White.
Placed near the medical control panel among other sensors and equipment that belonged in a private hospital room.
Evan had passed it when he entered.
He had stood beneath it when he locked the door.
He had stepped into its view when he lifted his shoe over Claire’s cast.
He had confessed within range of its microphone because arrogance made him careless.
Now he stared at it like it was alive.
Claire watched his face shift through every calculation.
Could he break it?
Could he claim malfunction?
Could he say she provoked him?
Could he turn the story before anyone outside the room understood the whole context?
The hidden footage was not shown publicly.
No screen played it for a crowd.
No officers stormed in.
No final judgment arrived.
Only the knowledge of recording existed between them, and it was enough to change the air.
Evan took one step toward the wall.
Margaret shook the door handle again.
He stopped.
“Mother,” he said, forcing his voice toward calm, “listen to me.”
Margaret did not calm.
Through the glass, her eyes remained fixed on Claire’s cast.
Claire saw her mouth form words.
What did you do?
Evan’s face cracked.
He looked younger, uglier, terrified.
Then anger returned because fear in men like Evan often came dressed as control.
He turned back to Claire.
“You made her watch?”
Claire’s eyes widened.
“You made her need to.”
The monitor beeped sharply.
Her pulse was rising.
She hated that he could still affect her body.
But she also knew the monitor was telling the truth without shame.
Pain.
Fear.
Stress.
All of it visible.
All of it part of the room.
Evan’s gaze snapped to the monitor, then away.
He hated machines now.
They measured what he preferred to narrate.
The IV controller sat under the blanket, button hidden again beneath Claire’s fingers.
Her thumb hovered near it, ready.
Evan noticed the movement.
His eyes narrowed.
“What else did you press?”
Claire did not answer.
That frightened him more than a confession.
He stepped toward the foot of the bed, then stopped before getting too close to the cast.
His own caution exposed him.
Claire looked at his shoe.
Then at his face.
He realized the movement had been recorded too.
Every hesitation.
Every glance.
Every attempt to assess damage.
The wall sensor remained silent.
Margaret remained outside.
The door remained locked.

But Evan was no longer alone with her.
