Chapter 10 - The Door Remains Open

Sienna’s mother’s professional identity was not revealed.
Her company voting power remained hidden.
The visitors outside were not named.
The sealed leather portfolio was not opened.
Garrick’s final consequences were not shown.
Whether Sienna left with her mother remained unanswered.
The story ended inside the lavish estate dining room and the cold-lit hallway beyond it, with the Sunday dinner frozen between chandelier warmth and approaching judgment.
Garrick stood at the open front door, one trembling hand still gripping the handle. His burgundy dinner jacket looked suddenly too bright against his pale face. The arrogance he had worn at the head of the table had collapsed into recognition and panic.
Outside waited several blurred men in dark suits, two uniformed officers, and one older man holding a sealed leather portfolio.
They said nothing.
They entered nowhere.
Their silence was worse than arrival.
Behind Garrick, Miriam gripped the dining table, pearl necklace trembling against her throat, her earlier cruelty replaced by rigid terror.
The four relatives remained seated, eyes wide, refusing to meet Sienna’s gaze just as they had refused to help her.
Sienna sat beside her mother, one arm secured in the white medical sling, good hand clutching the fabric near her chest. Her face was tearful, exhausted, and stunned with the first fragile shape of hope.
Her mother remained seated beside her, champagne blouse glowing softly beneath the chandelier, taupe suit smooth, diamond earrings still.
She placed her smartphone beside her plate.
Calm.
Unblinking.
Garrick slowly stepped backward from the door.
His eyes locked on her now.
Not on Sienna.
Not on Miriam.
On the woman he had underestimated when she walked into his dining room and asked one simple question.
“What happened to your arm?”
No answer had been enough.
No lie had survived.
The serving bowl sat untouched on the table.
The roast cooled.
Wine trembled in the glasses.
The doorway stayed open.
May you like
And in the silence before anyone explained the portfolio, the visitors, or the call, Garrick finally understood that the mother he had ignored had not come to argue.
She had come prepared.
