Chapter 9 - Sienna Looks at Her Mother

Sienna looked at her mother as if seeing a second person inside the woman who had raised her.

The first was familiar.

The mother who brought soup during college flu.

The mother who remembered favorite flowers.

The mother who called twice after Sienna’s wedding and politely accepted every “I’m fine.”

The second sat beside her now.

Still elegant.

Still gentle with Sienna’s hand.

But cold enough to make a room full of cruel people stop breathing.

Sienna whispered, “Who are they?”

Her mother’s eyes remained on Garrick.

“Not tonight.”

The answer should have frightened Sienna.

Instead, it steadied her.

Not tonight meant there was more.

Not tonight meant the truth would not be forced out in front of Miriam’s delighted face, Garrick’s possessive anger, and relatives who had watched her serve dinner in a sling.

Miriam pointed toward the hallway.

“You cannot bring officers into this house.”

Sienna’s mother slowly turned her head.

“I didn’t bring anyone in.”

Miriam looked toward the open doorway.

The visitors remained outside.

Silent.

Waiting.

The distinction made her face twitch.

Garrick’s fingers tightened on the door.

“I can make calls,” he said.

His voice lacked its earlier weight.

Sienna’s mother looked at him.

“Then why haven’t you?”

That question exposed the room.

Because he had a phone.

Because Miriam had a phone.

Because every family member at the table had a phone.

Yet no one reached for one.

Fear had taught them stillness now.

The same stillness they once expected from Sienna.

The reversal filled her chest with painful air.

Her mother squeezed her hand again.

Sienna looked down at the sling.

For the first time that night, shame began to loosen.

Not vanish.

Loosen.

Garrick looked from the visitors to Sienna’s mother.

Recognition spread across his face.

Whatever he had dismissed about her before, he dismissed no longer.
