Chapter 7 - The Hallway Light

The hallway was brighter than the dining room.
Cold, white light against warm chandelier gold.
As Garrick stepped through the double doors, his burgundy dinner jacket seemed suddenly theatrical, almost ridiculous. The confident host became a man leaving his own stage to face an audience he had not invited.
Sienna watched him go.
Her breath trembled.
Her mother did not.
She sat beside Sienna with terrifying stillness, smartphone beside her plate, hand still covering her daughter’s.
Miriam stared after Garrick.
The four relatives sat frozen.
The roast cooled.
A wineglass clicked faintly against porcelain because someone’s hand would not stop shaking.
From the hallway came the sound of the front door being approached.
Garrick’s voice carried back.
Loud.
Performing.
“I’ll handle this.”
Sienna’s mother looked toward the open doorway.
“Yes,” she said softly, too low for anyone but Sienna to hear. “He will try.”
Sienna turned to her.
“Mom…”
Her mother’s face softened only when looking at her.
“Do not decide anything tonight.”
Sienna’s lips parted.
That sentence reached her deeper than comfort.
It meant she did not have to promise to leave.
Did not have to promise to stay.
Did not have to solve marriage, pregnancy, injury, fear, family, and survival at one dinner table.
She only had to sit there and breathe.
No final decision revealed.
No future shown.
Only the present moment where someone had finally taken the serving bowl from her hand.
The front door opened.
Not fully visible from the dining room.
Only Garrick’s back appeared through the open hallway angle.
Then his body locked.
The change was immediate.
His shoulders stiffened.
His hand froze on the door.
His head pulled back a fraction, as if he had seen something that rearranged the world.
Miriam whispered, “Garrick?”
May you like
He did not answer.
