Chapter 8 - The Silhouettes Outside

Sienna could not see the visitors clearly.

Only shapes through the open doorway.

Several severe men in dark suits.

Two uniformed officers.

An older man holding a sealed leather portfolio.

Blurred by hallway light.

Unnamed.

Unexplained.

Their purpose hidden.

But their stillness was enough.

They did not push inside.

They did not shout.

They did not need to.

Garrick stood gripping the open door, hand trembling against the frame.

His confidence drained from his posture before it left his face.

Then slowly, he stepped backward.

One step.

Then another.

The dining room watched him reappear.

His skin had gone pale.

Miriam rose so quickly her chair scraped the floor.

“What is it?”

Garrick did not answer.

His eyes moved toward Sienna’s mother.

For the first time, he did not look at her as an intrusive older woman.

He looked at her as a calculation he had failed to understand.

Sienna’s mother remained seated.

She placed her smartphone beside her plate.

The movement was calm.

Final.

Miriam stared at it.

Then at the hallway.

Then at the portfolio held by the blurred older man outside.

“What did you do?” Miriam whispered.

Sienna’s mother did not look at her.

She looked at Garrick.

“I answered your lesson.”

His throat moved.

The family members exchanged terrified glances.

Sienna clutched her sling with her good hand, eyes wide with dawning realization.

Not full understanding.

Not yet.

Only enough to know her mother had not come empty-handed.

Garrick tried to straighten.

He failed.

His hand remained on the door.

The people outside waited silently.

No one entered.

No one explained.

That was what made the moment unbearable.
