Chapter 6 - Miriam’s Smile Breaks
Miriam had built her cruelty out of certainty.
Certainty that her son would be obeyed.
Certainty that Sienna had no one powerful enough to matter.
Certainty that injuries could be renamed discipline if the room agreed.
Certainty that wealth made witnesses loyal.
The doorbell broke that certainty.
The phone call shattered what remained.
Her smile cracked first at the corners.
Then her jaw locked.
Then one hand moved toward her pearl necklace, gripping it hard enough to press marks into her skin.
Sienna’s mother watched the transformation with no satisfaction.
A woman like Miriam did not regret pain.
She regretted exposure.
“Garrick,” Miriam said carefully, “perhaps we should ask them to return tomorrow.”
Garrick turned on her.
“You don’t even know who they are.”
“Neither do you.”
That was the wrong thing to say.
The room heard it.
Garrick’s face drained.
Sienna’s eyes lifted.
Her mother remained silent.
Miriam realized she had admitted fear into the open.
She reached for her wineglass, but her hand shook so badly the liquid trembled.
Sienna’s mother looked at the glass.
“Careful.”
Miriam’s eyes flashed.
“Do not patronize me.”
“I’m not,” Sienna’s mother said. “I’m observing you.”
The words landed with surgical precision.
Garrick strode toward the double doors.
Each step was aggressive, loud, too forceful.
The relatives watched him go.
Nobody rose with him.
That abandonment was small, but Sienna saw it.
For the first time all evening, Garrick walked alone.
Her mother leaned closer.
“Stay seated.”
Sienna nodded, tears on her cheeks, good hand still resting protectively over her stomach.
Miriam stood halfway, then sat again when Sienna’s mother looked at her.
Outside the dining room, Garrick reached the hallway.
Cold light spilled around his body.
