Chapter 1 - Page Forty-Seven

A pregnant woman in a wheelchair is assaulted and pressured to surrender her fortune until one hidden contract clause turns the entire family council against itself.
The double doors slammed shut behind Mara Vale.
Two uncles twisted the lock with theatrical force.
Rain battered the leaded windows of the Greenwich council chamber, cold stormlight crawling over dark wood walls, ancestral portraits, a marble fireplace, and the long polished mahogany table where eight Vale men sat waiting.
Mara remained in her black wheelchair at the end of the table, one hand resting protectively over her seven-month pregnancy.
Adrian stood beside her.
He did not touch her shoulder.
He did not look into her eyes.
Conrad Vale strode toward her in his pinstripe suit, silver hair shining beneath the crystal chandelier. His face looked carved from contempt.
He threw a thick legal folder onto Mara’s lap.
The impact made her flinch.
A black fountain pen rolled across the pages.
Conrad stabbed one finger toward the signature line.
“No son means no marriage. Sign away everything.”
The uncles leaned closer with smug approval.
Mara’s lips trembled.
Then her eyes lifted.
“My daughter is healthy. Your dynasty is the defect.”
Silence cracked through the room.
Adrian gripped the wheelchair handle and bent toward her without meeting her gaze.
“Mara, sign it. We can fix this later.”
She let the pen fall.
It struck the floor.
Conrad’s rage exploded.
His open hand snapped once across her face.
The room jolted with the sound.
Mara’s head turned. A faint split appeared on her lip.
Adrian recoiled.
Still, he did nothing.
Mara slowly touched her mouth, looked at the blood on her fingertip, and smiled.
Then she pulled the silver laptop from beneath the forged folder and flipped it open.
“You should have read page forty-seven.”
Adrian’s face drained white.
Conrad lunged.
“Shut it down! Now!”
Mara pressed the trackpad.
Every wall screen flashed violent red.
The electronic door lock blinked red.

And for the first time, the men around the table looked terrified of the woman they had trapped.
