Chapter 5 - The Men Around the Table

The eight uncles and trustees had enjoyed the first part of the meeting.
Mara had seen it.
The approving nods when Conrad locked the doors.
The little smiles when the folder struck her lap.
The way they leaned forward when she was told to sign.
They thought cruelty became respectable when performed around mahogany.
Now those same men looked old, frightened, and suddenly unsure where to place their hands.
One held a water glass so tightly it cracked at the rim.
Another kept pressing his phone screen though nothing loaded.
A third stared at Mara’s wheelchair as if trying to understand how the woman seated in it had trapped them standing.
Mara looked around the table slowly.
“You all came prepared to witness my surrender.”
No one answered.
She let the silence punish them.
The counsel near the doors adjusted her portfolio.
That small movement made three trustees turn at once.
Conrad snapped, “Stop looking at her.”
They looked back at him.
But not with the same obedience as before.
The red light had changed their hierarchy.
A locked room could empower a patriarch only while everyone believed he controlled the exit.
Now the exit belonged to something else.
Adrian leaned closer to Mara, voice barely audible.
“Tell me what page forty-seven says.”
She turned her head.
His eyes finally met hers.
Too late.
“Why?” she asked.
His throat moved.
“So I can help.”
Mara looked at the faint blood on her finger, then at his untouched hands.
“You had your chance.”
The words landed between them like the pen on the floor.
Adrian stepped back.
His face crumpled with horror—not only at her rejection, but at the recognition that he had earned it in front of everyone.
Conrad pointed at the laptop again.
“Close it.”
Mara calmly rested one finger near the trackpad.
Conrad froze.
The room understood.

Whatever came next might happen if she touched it again.
