Chapter 9 - Conrad Recognizes the Trap

Conrad’s hand trembled above the laptop.
He had stopped lunging.
That mattered.
The entire chamber noticed.
This was a man who never stopped moving toward what he wanted.
A man who crossed rooms like territory.
A man who interrupted doctors, attorneys, priests, and sons.
A man who believed hesitation belonged to lesser blood.
Now he hovered.
Frozen.
Afraid to touch a computer controlled by the woman he had just struck.
Mara watched him closely.
Recognition moved through his face in ugly stages.
Rage.
Confusion.
Memory.
Calculation.
Panic.
He looked down at the forged folder on her lap.
Then at the uncles.
Then at Adrian.
Then at the counsel.
“You knew,” he said.
No one knew who he meant.
Mara?
Adrian?
The counsel?
Someone outside the room?
The question stayed unanswered.
Adrian staggered backward and pressed one hand against his chest.
“Mara…”
She did not soften.
This was not the moment for wifehood.
This was the moment survival took its chair at the table.
The counsel opened her portfolio fully now, but the contents remained unseen.
Conrad’s eyes darted toward it.
“Close that.”
She did not.
One trustee collapsed back into his chair.
Another whispered, “Conrad, what did you put in the agreement?”
Conrad turned on him.
“Shut up.”
But the question had already entered everyone.
What had Conrad put in the agreement?
What had page forty-seven contained?
What had Mara seen?
What had the laptop activated?
Who controlled the company?
No answers came.
Only red light.
Only rain.
Only Mara’s faint smile.
She placed her palm over her pregnancy.
Her daughter moved again.

Mara looked at Conrad as if hearing a future he could not command.
