Chapter 4 - Conrad’s Dynasty

Conrad Vale had built his entire life around the word dynasty.
He used it at family dinners.
At shareholder retreats.
In interviews.
At weddings.
At funerals.
Dynasty meant male heirs when he said it.
Dynasty meant obedience.
Bloodline.
Control.
A table of older men deciding which women deserved protection and which ones deserved signatures shoved into their laps.
Mara had heard the word so many times it no longer sounded grand.
It sounded diseased.
Conrad stood inches from the laptop, face twisted, one hand still suspended in the red glow.
“You think a hidden clause can undo this family?”
Mara looked at the closed folder on her lap.
“No. This family undid itself.”
An uncle barked, “You arrogant little—”
The corporate counsel stepped forward.
The uncle stopped.
Nobody knew who she represented tonight, and uncertainty made cowards out of men accustomed to certainty.
Conrad noticed the shift and hated it.
He turned back to Mara.
“You are carrying a daughter. Nothing in that changes succession.”
Mara’s hand flattened over her pregnancy.
“My child is not your failed business plan.”
The words struck the table.
A chair scraped backward.
Adrian closed his eyes.
Conrad’s face went red again.
For a terrible second, Mara thought he might raise his hand a second time.
He did not.
The red door lock blinked.
The screens burned behind him.
The female counsel watched.
Evidence had made even Conrad aware of his body.
He could roar.
He could point.
He could threaten.
But he now understood the room was no longer private.
Mara looked at the laptop.
Then at the locked doors.
Then at the wall screens.
She had not revealed page forty-seven.
She had not explained the red glow.
She had not named who truly controlled anything.
May you like
She only let fear do what truth would later finish.
