Chapter 3 - Adrian Does Nothing

Adrian’s stillness became its own betrayal.
Mara had known his weakness before tonight.
She had seen it at dinners, in offices, beside elevators, during calls with Conrad where Adrian’s voice lost all warmth and became obedience.
But knowing a man is weak is different from feeling his silence after his father strikes you.
She turned her head slightly and looked at him.
He flinched from the blood at her lip.
Good.
Let him see it.
Let him carry the image.
His hand remained on the wheelchair handle, fingers trembling around the black grip.
“You could have stopped him,” she said quietly.
Adrian’s mouth opened.
The room waited.
Conrad snapped, “This is not about feelings.”
Mara’s gaze stayed on her husband.
“It never was, was it?”
Adrian looked down.
The answer was in his shame.
He had chosen inheritance language over marriage vows.
Board votes over prenatal appointments.
His father’s approval over his wife’s safety.
Mara did not need him to confess.
His silence had already signed.
One trustee slammed his fist onto the table.
“Enough of this theater. What are the screens?”
Mara slowly looked at him.
“Theater was locking a pregnant woman in a room and calling it governance.”
The trustee recoiled as if her words had touched him physically.
Conrad’s jaw ground hard.
“You have no authority here.”
Mara smiled faintly.
“Then why are you afraid of my laptop?”
No one moved.
Outside, lightning flashed against the windows.
Inside, red light bled across ancestral portraits, making every painted Vale patriarch look as if he were burning from within.
The corporate counsel finally opened her black portfolio by one inch.
Conrad saw the movement.
His face tightened.
Adrian saw it too.
“Mara,” he whispered, “what did you do?”
She looked at him with unnerving calm.

“I waited for all of you to show me exactly who you are.”
