Chapter 1 - The Newborn Cry at the Wedding

A rejected mother crashes her ex husband’s wedding with their newborn and a sealed clinic report that sends the groom and pregnant bride into panic.

Connor was leaning toward Alyssa for the kiss when the newborn cried.

The sound was tiny.

Fragile.

Impossible to ignore.

It cut through the applause, the champagne glasses, the crystal chandeliers, and the perfect white ballroom like a truth no music could cover.

Every guest turned.

The double doors at the back of the Charleston wedding ballroom swung open.

Grace stood there in a champagne satin gown, long blonde waves over her shoulders, tears shining on her controlled face.

In one arm, she held Brinley securely against her chest, the newborn wrapped in a delicate white lace dress and headband.

In the other hand, she carried a thick sealed medical envelope.

Connor’s smile vanished.

“What are you doing here?”

Grace walked forward.

Not fast.

Not weak.

Every step was steady enough to make the guests fall silent one row at a time.

Betsy pushed through the crowd in a silver evening gown, pearls trembling against her throat as rage twisted her elegant face.

“Take that useless girl and leave this wedding!”

Grace stopped inches from her.

Brinley stirred.

Grace shifted the baby higher against her shoulder, protective and calm.

Then she lifted the envelope.

Connor saw it.

His face drained before anyone read a single word.

Grace looked past Betsy, directly at him.

“You built this marriage on a medical lie.”

Alyssa clutched her rounded stomach beneath the lace of her wedding gown.

Connor came down from the altar too quickly.

He reached for the envelope.

Grace pulled it away.

Alyssa stepped between them, panicked tears ruining her makeup.

“She’s jealous, unstable, and lying about everything!”

Grace said nothing.

She placed the sealed envelope into Connor’s shaking hand.

He tore it open.

The first page slid halfway out.

No one could read it.

But Connor could.

His knees weakened.

Betsy looked over his shoulder.

Her mouth fell open.

Alyssa staggered backward.

Grace held Brinley close and whispered, cold enough for the room to feel it.
