Chapter 5 - The Groom Turns Pale
Connor had once made Grace feel small with silence.
He rarely shouted.
He did not need to.
A lifted eyebrow.
A delayed answer.
A cold text.
A door closing before she finished speaking.
That had been his violence of choice.
Emotional distance polished into sophistication.
But now, beneath the crystal lights of his own wedding reception, he had no silence large enough to hide inside.
The page in his hand trembled.
Grace could see his eyes moving across the lines he refused to show.
She did not need to see the report again.
She had memorized enough.
Not every detail.
Not the full medical truth.
Not the buried consequences.
Enough to know why Connor’s face had collapsed.
Alyssa gripped his arm.
“Don’t let her ruin us.”
Connor looked at the word us like he no longer knew what it meant.
Grace shifted Brinley gently, supporting her head.
“Careful, Connor,” she said. “You’re holding the wrong thing like it matters.”
His eyes snapped toward the newborn.
For one suspended second, he looked at Brinley as if seeing her for the first time.
The lace headband.
The soft cheek.
The small fist tucked near Grace’s collarbone.
His daughter.
Or the daughter he had treated as disposable before a report made him afraid of what he had thrown away.
Grace did not let him reach toward her.
He did not try.
Good.
Alyssa saw the look and panicked.
“She did this on purpose,” she cried. “She waited until today.”
Grace looked at her.
“Yes.”
The honesty stunned the room.
Grace continued, calm and cutting.
“I waited until you stood in white under chandeliers and asked everyone to bless a lie.”
Alyssa’s mouth fell open.
Betsy hissed, “You cruel girl.”
Grace’s eyes hardened.
“No. Cruel would have been bringing the whole truth.”
The ballroom recoiled.
Because that meant there was more.
More than the envelope.
More than the first page.
More than Connor’s sudden terror.
Alyssa’s hand tightened over her stomach.
Connor saw it.
