Chapter 2 - The Envelope He Feared

Connor’s hand shook around the medical envelope.

That was what the guests saw first.

Not the document.

Not the hidden report.

His hand.

The same hand that had held Alyssa’s at the altar minutes earlier.

The same hand wearing a new wedding ring.

The same hand that had once pushed Grace out of his life and told her she was “too emotional to be believed.”

Now that hand trembled so violently the torn paper edge fluttered beneath the chandelier light.

Grace watched him.

She had imagined this moment during nights when Brinley would not sleep.

She had imagined shouting.

Crying.

Throwing the truth into his face.

But standing inside the ballroom with her newborn against her chest, she felt strangely still.

Connor looked at the page again.

His eyes raced over the unreadable lines.

Then he looked at Alyssa.

Alyssa’s face had turned a terrible shade of white beneath her makeup.

“Connor,” she whispered.

He did not answer.

Betsy grabbed his arm.

“What is it?”

Connor turned the page slightly away from her.

That movement said more than any confession.

Betsy’s arrogance collapsed into fear.

The guests leaned forward, silent and hungry.

Grace tightened her hold around Brinley.

The baby made a soft sound, cheek pressed safely against her mother’s shoulder.

Grace kissed the top of her head.

Alyssa stepped forward, gown rustling dramatically around her visible pregnancy.

“This is sick,” she cried. “She brings a baby here, she brings some envelope, and everyone just believes her?”

Grace turned to her.

“I haven’t asked anyone to believe me.”

Alyssa’s lips trembled.

Grace nodded toward the paper in Connor’s hand.

“I brought what he already recognizes.”

Connor flinched.

A murmur moved through the guests.

Betsy snapped toward Grace.

“You planned this.”

Grace’s eyes moved slowly to the mother-in-law who had once called Brinley “a problem wrapped in a blanket.”

“No,” Grace said quietly. “Connor planned all of it. I just kept the proof.”

Connor’s gaze dropped again to the report.

He looked as if he wanted to tear it, hide it, swallow it, make it disappear.

But forty people were watching.

And Grace had made sure his silence could no longer protect him.
