Chapter 10 - Before Connor Asks
Connor’s medical procedure was not revealed.
The complete clinic report remained hidden.
The unborn baby’s biological father was not named.
No legal consequence arrived.
Grace’s full revenge stayed unseen.
The story ended in the grand Charleston wedding ballroom beneath brilliant crystal chandeliers, white floral arrangements, champagne glasses, and a suffocating silence that had replaced celebration.
Grace stood near the aisle in her champagne satin gown, one arm securely holding newborn Brinley against her chest, the other lowered after giving Connor the sealed medical envelope.
Her face was tearful.
But controlled.
Cold with the strength of a mother who had been dismissed too many times and finally arrived with proof no one could laugh away.
Brinley slept safely against her shoulder, tiny white lace dress pressed against Grace’s gown.
Connor stood frozen in his black tuxedo, the clinic report half pulled from the torn envelope, his wedding ring hand shaking violently.
His face was drained of color.
His eyes moved from the hidden page to Alyssa, then to Betsy, then back to the report.
Betsy clutched his arm, all her arrogance gone, mouth open in horror as if she had seen the edge of a disaster she helped invite.
Alyssa staggered backward in her white lace gown, both hands locked over her pregnant stomach, veil trembling as tears streaked her makeup.
The guests leaned forward, stunned and silent.
No one knew exactly what Connor had read.
But everyone saw what it did to him.
Grace looked directly at Connor.
“Now ask your bride why she was never supposed to see that report.”
Alyssa shook her head without speaking.
Betsy’s grip tightened.
Connor’s lips parted.
The question almost came.
But the truth did not.
Not yet.
The report stayed partly hidden.
