Chapter 7 - Brinley’s Cry

Brinley cried again.

Only once.

A soft, newborn sound.

Grace immediately shifted her weight and supported the baby closer against her chest, one hand at the back of Brinley’s head, the other firm beneath the blanket.

The room softened for half a second.

Even scandal bends around a newborn.

Connor looked at the baby.

His expression changed in a way Grace could not trust.

Pain, maybe.

Fear, definitely.

Regret, possibly too late to matter.

Grace stepped back before he could take even one step closer.

His face tightened.

“You brought her into this.”

Grace’s eyes flashed.

“No, Connor. You left her outside of it.”

The words struck him.

Alyssa’s face twisted.

“She doesn’t belong here.”

The instant she said it, the room felt the ugliness.

A newborn did not belong at a wedding built partly on her erasure.

That was Alyssa’s meaning, though she tried too late to soften it.

Grace looked at her.

“She belongs wherever the truth is being buried.”

Betsy whispered, “Enough.”

Grace turned toward her.

“Not yet.”

The baby quieted again.

Grace kissed her forehead.

Connor watched the tenderness with an expression that grew more fractured by the second.

He had expected Grace to arrive broken.

Instead she had arrived as a mother.

That made her harder to dismiss.

Harder to paint as unstable.

Harder to erase.

Alyssa stepped closer to Connor, pressing her body against his side as if reclaiming him through proximity.

Connor did not move away.

But he did not lean into her either.

Grace saw that.

Alyssa saw it too.

Her eyes filled with panic.

She whispered his name.

He looked down at the report.

The hidden page trembled in his hand.

The wedding ring on his finger caught the chandelier light.

Grace thought of all the times he had told her paperwork didn’t matter when trust existed.

Now paperwork was the only reason he was afraid.
