Chapter 1 - The Doll in the Blue Dress

A struggling mother watches her family steal the birthday doll she saved four months to buy, call her five year old daughter a mistake, and panic when she discovers they have secretly emptied her bank account.

Gabriela knelt on the polished supermarket floor with seven quarters, four dimes, and three nickels trembling in her palm.

Willow stood beside her in the toy aisle, holding the blue-dressed doll against her chest like it was something holy.

The doll was not grand to anyone else.

Plastic face.

Blonde curls.

Blue satin dress.

Small cardboard crown taped inside the box.

But to Willow, it was the birthday dream she had stared at through the supermarket shelf for four months.

“Do we have enough, Mommy?” Willow whispered.

Gabriela swallowed hard and counted again.

They had enough.

Barely.

Her coin purse was empty now. Her backpack strap was frayed. Her faded olive-gray overshirt hung loose over the charcoal T-shirt she had worn to work that morning. Her hands smelled faintly of dish soap from the diner.

But they had enough.

“For your birthday,” Gabriela said softly, “we have enough.”

Willow’s tiny smile broke open.

Then Gabriela saw Vanessa at the far end of the aisle.

Cream suit.

Gold earrings.

Perfect blonde updo.

Luxury handbag tucked beneath one arm.

Her mother-in-law stopped as if she had seen garbage on the floor.

Behind her came Ronald, heavy and stiff in his navy blazer, and Janice, elegant in black with her quilted designer handbag and her daughter Piper beside her in a private-school sweater.

Vanessa’s face twisted.

She marched toward them.

“You can barely feed her, yet you buy her expensive dreams?”

Gabriela rose too fast.

“Vanessa, don’t.”

Vanessa lunged.

Her manicured hand tore the doll from Willow’s arms.

Willow pitched forward, fingers clawing at the blue dress.

“Grandma, it’s mine!”

Ronald stepped inches from Gabriela’s face.

“Your daughter is a mistake this family has to endure.”

The aisle seemed to stop breathing.

Gabriela pulled Willow behind her.

Janice smirked and pushed Piper forward.

“Piper deserves something beautiful far more than she does.”

Vanessa shoved the doll into Piper’s hands.

Then Gabriela’s phone vibrated.

She looked down.

A red banking warning symbol glowed on the screen.

Unreadable details.

But she knew enough.

Her savings account had been emptied.

Gabriela looked at Vanessa’s expensive purse.

Vanessa looked back too quickly.

And grief became suspicion.
