Chapter 7 - Evidence of Who You Are

Vanessa hated being documented.
She loved being witnessed when she controlled the scene, but documentation was different.
Documentation had no manners.
No family loyalty.
No fear of social rank.
A timestamp did not care whether Vanessa wore cream silk or carried a handbag worth a month of Gabriela’s rent.
That was why Gabriela said evidence.
The word struck the aisle like a dropped can.
Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.
“What did you record?”
Gabriela had not recorded the whole thing.
Not yet.
But Vanessa did not know that.
Gabriela looked at the security camera dome mounted near the end of the supermarket aisle.
Then at Grant? No—there was no Grant here. At Janice’s phone half-visible inside her designer handbag.
Then at the shoppers pretending not to stare.
“Enough,” Gabriela said.
Ronald stepped back toward them.
His face was darker now.
“You are making a very serious mistake.”
Gabriela almost smiled.
“No. You made it when you thought I would still be too embarrassed to speak.”
Willow looked up at her mother.
There was fear in her face.
But also something new.
A tiny light of recognition.
Mommy was not shrinking.
Not this time.
Vanessa saw Willow looking and hated it.
“You’re teaching her defiance.”
“I’m teaching her not to let people steal from her and call it family.”
Ronald lunged one step forward.
Gabriela did not move back.
A stock clerk at the far end of the aisle paused with a cart.
Ronald saw him.
Stopped.
Public.
Bright lights.
Security cameras.
Gabriela’s phone.
A report already filed.
For the first time, Ronald’s dominance had boundaries he did not control.
Janice bent toward Piper.
“Come on. We’re leaving.”
Piper looked at Willow.
Then at the doll.
Her small voice came out barely above a whisper.
“Mom, maybe she should—”
Janice’s grip tightened.
“Not another word.”
Gabriela saw Piper’s face crumple.
Willow saw it too.
The doll had become heavy in the wrong child’s arms.
Vanessa moved closer to Gabriela, lowering her voice.
“You have no idea what you just started.”
Gabriela leaned in enough that only Vanessa could hear.
“Yes, I do.”
But she did not.
Not fully.
She knew something was coming.
Something beyond the account.
Something that made Ronald step toward the exit and Janice check her phone with trembling fingers.
Vanessa’s smile returned.
Slow.
Sinister.
“Then you should be careful tonight.”
May you like
Gabriela’s blood went cold.
