Chapter 4 - The Red Warning on the Phone

Gabriela stared at the phone long enough for the aisle to blur.

Her banking app was not fully open.

The warning icon was enough.

Red.

Urgent.

Account action.

She had seen similar warnings twice before when rent withdrawals failed or when her balance dropped below five dollars. But this was different. It came from the small savings account linked to the birthday money, emergency food money, and the tiny deposit she had been building for Willow’s school trip.

Her mouth went dry.

Vanessa watched her too closely.

That confirmed more than any statement.

Gabriela lifted her eyes.

“What did you do?”

Vanessa’s lips parted, then curled.

“I have no idea what you mean.”

Ronald stepped forward.

“Don’t you dare accuse your elders in public.”

Gabriela’s laugh came out sharp and broken.

“Elders?”

Willow tugged her sleeve.

“Mommy, can we just go?”

The fear in her voice nearly made Gabriela obey.

Leave the doll.

Leave the aisle.

Leave the humiliation.

Take her child home, lock the door, cry in the bathroom.

That was the old pattern.

Survive quietly.

But the phone vibrated again in her hand, and Gabriela understood quiet survival had become permission.

Vanessa still had the doll.

Janice still had Piper’s shoulder in her grip.

Ronald still stood close enough to make Gabriela step back if she were the woman he remembered.

She was not.

Gabriela turned the phone away from them and moved her thumb across the screen.

Not showing text.

Not revealing details.

Just acting.

Freeze.

Report.

Confirm.

Lock card.

Change access.

Her fingers shook violently, but they moved.

Vanessa’s face changed.

“What are you doing?”

Gabriela kept tapping.

Ronald tried to see the screen.

“Hand me that phone.”

Gabriela looked up.

“No.”

Vanessa lunged.

Her clawed hand reached for the phone.

Gabriela knocked it aside with a force that made Vanessa recoil dramatically into Ronald.

Willow gasped.

Piper hugged the doll tighter.

Janice’s smirk vanished for the first time.

Gabriela stepped fully in front of Willow.

“You stole my savings after stealing my daughter’s birthday.”

The aisle fell silent.

A shopper at the far end stopped pretending to browse.

Vanessa’s face drained of color for one second.

One fatal second.

Then humiliation twisted it into rage.

“I stole nothing from you.”

Gabriela lifted the phone.

“Then why are you scared I stopped it?”

Ronald gripped Vanessa’s arm.

Janice looked toward the aisle exit.

The three adults exchanged a dark, calculated look.

Gabriela saw it.

And suddenly the supermarket felt too small.
